Hilarious 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' at TBTS
The Matunuck barn theatre closes its season with a hilarious production of the sometimes raunchy musical about two con men that team up while trying to outdo each other in bilking rich women out of their fortunes.
While the story can get a bit out of hand at times and often goes for below-the-belt humor, there are more than enough laughs to keep you going through Labor Day.
Much of the success of the musical goes to the two stars, Al Bundonis as the sophisticated Lawrence Jameson and Jason Gillman as the unsophisticated Freddy Benson.
Gillman played the role many times on Broadway and has the physical humor down pat. Bundonis captures the attention of the ladies, both on stage and in the audience. The two work off each other perfectly.
Add a supporting cast of pretty young ladies and handsome young men and you’ve got a glitzy, well choreographed, fast-paced production, one that had the opening night crowd on its feet in appreciation.
I won’t spoil the story, which has lots of twists and turns, sight gags and double entendres, plus songs with clever lyrics that will keep you in stitches. The two con men team up to rid Lawrence of a marrying-minded wealthy cowgirl, then make a bet to see who can be successful in swindling a lovely young lady (Lisa Yuen) out of her fortune.
Watching the “dirty rotten scoundrels” one-up each other is a fast and furious experience, filled with surprises, twists and an ending (actually three endings) that should catch you off guard.
There are 18 scene changes that are cleverly handled on the small Matunuck stage, aided by some great lighting by Paul Toben. There are also some great costumes by Cranstonian Marcia Zammarelli, who is doing double-duty as costume shop manager.
A subplot involving Lawrence’s French accomplice (Christopher Swan) and a wealthy American (Rhode Island College’s own Stacey Geer) adds to the enjoyment. There’s even a funny line about Pawtucket.
“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” continues at Theatre-by-the-Sea through Sept. 6. Tickets are $39-$49. Call 782-TKTS for reservations. It’s a great way to brighten up your summer.
