Cranston West product Bobby Allen hit the trail in competition for the first time this season last Friday at the Coast to Coast Invitational, as the former Falcon and current UMass-Lowell River Hawk heads down the homestretch of his collegiate running career.
Allen last competed on the track in May with a championship-winning performance at the ECAC meet in the 5,000 meters, but has one more year of cross-country eligibility remaining and is competing this autumn in the hopes of guiding his teammates to a first-ever America East championship.
His final campaign got off to a somewhat rocky start, however, as a difficult middle portion of the 8-kilometer took Allen’s name out of the discussion when it came time to decide the podium places.
In the end, the senior standout crossed in 37th place with a time of 24 minutes, 46 seconds, with his effort helping UMass-Lowell come home 11th out of 21 competing teams.
Additionally, the performances posted by Allen and his River Hawk teammates so far this fall have earned regional recognition, with UMass-Lowell entering the Northeast coaches’ poll this week as the 13th-ranked team in the region.
Lambrese contributing for Nor’easters
Cranston West alumna Courtney Lambrese has earned a starting spot at middle hitter for the University of New England volleyball team this autumn, helping to make an instant impact for a young Nor’easter squad that is holding its own so far in 2015.
In seven matches for UNE, Lambrese has notched 52 kills and nine service aces, three of which came in the Nor’easters’ most recent tilt, a five-set defeat to Western New England last Saturday.
The setback to the Golden Bears continues a pattern that has seen the University of New England alternate between losing and winning, dating back to the team’s season opener on Sept. 5 against Vassar, which saw the Brewers win in straight sets.
Coming up this weekend for the 3-4 Nor’easters is the first of two trips this season to Rhode Island, in the form of the Wildcat Classic at Johnson and Wales.
In addition to the hosts, Lambrese and her UNE teammates will square off against Bridgewater State, Southern Maine and Rhode Island College.
The Nor’easters will then make a return visit to the Ocean State on Oct. 24 to take on Salve Regina in the team’s next-to-last conference match of the campaign.
