Allen claims first in 5000m at ECAC/IC4A

Former Cranston West standout Bobby Allen made the most of his final track meet as a UMass-Lowell athlete, stringing together a pair of fine performances at last weekend’s ECAC/IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J.

The former Falcon’s weekend started on Friday evening with the 5,000 meters, hoping for a better result than the fourth place he had to settle for two weeks ago at the America East Championship meet.

Allen spent the first several laps of the race biding his time, staying in the main pack while the leaders pushed the pace.

Then, with two laps remaining, Allen took the lead and established some breathing space between himself and the rest of the pack, eventually crossing the line in triumph with a time of 14 minutes, 10.96 seconds.

Allen’s winning effort came with a side dish of history, as it marked the first time that a UMass-Lowell athlete had reached the top step of the podium at the ECAC/IC4A meet.

After experiencing the unprecedented high, the senior distance ace then had to prepare himself for a new challenge in the form of the 1,500 meters.

Allen successfully qualified from his heat on Saturday, but by the time the final rolled around the following afternoon, the effects of racing on three straight days—something he had never done before—were starting to tell.

Although he was at a distinct disadvantage compared to his fellow competitors, Allen was still able to come home in eighth place in a time of 3:50.32, thus putting the cap on a weekend that saw him as the only athlete that competed in more than one distance event.

Razzino, Ravens fall short in Division II East Regional

The baseball season for John Razzino and the Franklin Pierce nine ended in disappointment Sunday as the Ravens were eliminated in the East regional by Wilmington, 5-3.

The Cranston East product opened the scoring with his fourth home run of the season in the third inning, a solo shot that hugged the left field line.

However, that was the only lead that Franklin Pierce would enjoy all afternoon, as Wilmington responded with a four-run fourth that was sparked by a Mike Annone single that drove home a pair of Wildcat runners.

The Wildcats were also the beneficiaries of a quality start from Ray Gambone, who went seven innings while striking out seven and not surrendering a walk to pick up his fifth win of the season.

Despite falling short of their first trip to a Division II College World Series since 2013, Franklin Pierce does have plenty to hang their hats on this spring; the Ravens were ranked No. 1

In the national poll for the first time in program history, while their 48 wins were one shy of the school record.

As for Razzino, he finishes his senior season with a .305 batting average, 41 RBIs and 45 stolen bases, tying the program record he set the previous spring.

Additionally, the former Thunderbolt was named first team All-Northeast 10 and second team All-East Region by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
