An evening with the Mayors: Civility in politics

Posted

It is rare that Rhode Islanders witness civility in politics or have the opportunity to spend an evening listening to two mayors, both of whom may be running for Governor of Rhode Island.

Mayors Allan Fung of Cranston and Angel Taveras of Providence will be speaking on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Quonset O Club. A buffet dinner will be followed by presentations by the mayors.

Friends and rivals, Mayors Taveras and Fung have long been initiated into the Rhode Island political scene. It is their friendship that makes this evening unique. Both are graduates of Classical High School in Providence, and both have served as mayors of large Rhode Island cities. These men are often in touch with one another to discuss issues, knowing that problems are not solved by political inspiration but by a reasoned mind, or two.

This evening is sponsored by the Rhode Island Commandery, Military Order of Foreign Wars to mark an important time in Rhode Island history, a rivalry in politics that is marked by the civility of reason. Tickets are $40 per person in advance and available by calling 738-3844 or mailing a check to RIMOFW at 26 Mohawk St., Coventry, 02816. See www.rimofw.org for further information.
