The field of hopefuls for city offices in November’s election has been finalized.
The deadline for candidates to submit the required number of signatures from registered voters passed on July 15, and declared candidates across the board met the threshold for ballot placement.
Republican Mayor Allan Fung will seek what would be his fourth and final term. He faces a challenge from Michael Sepe, a former City Council member and the longtime chairman of the Cranston Democratic City Committee.
For the three citywide seats on the council, the Democratic slate will feature Council President John Lanni Jr. and newcomers Lammis Vargas and Kate Aubin. On the Republican side, Councilman Michael Farina – who earlier this year switched his party affiliation from Democratic – is joined by newcomers Kenneth Hopkins and Louis Petrucci Jr.
All six ward seats on the council will be contests. In Ward 1, incumbent Democrat Steve Stycos faces a challenge from Republican Stephen Gillissee. In Ward 2, Republican Donald Botts Jr. is seeking a new term against Democrat Paul McAuley.
In Ward 3, incumbent Democrat Paul Archetto faces a challenge from Republican Johnrita Bina. Ward 4 Democrat Mario Aceto will square off against Republican Trent Colford, who currently serves as the ward’s representative on the School Committee.
In Ward 5, Republican Chris Paplauskas is seeking a second term, and faces a challenge from Democrat Stephen Ciambrone. Ward 6 Republican Michael Favicchio will seek re-election against Democrat Sherry Ferdinandi, who was nominated by the city party.
Only one school committee post – Colford’s Ward 4 seat – will be contested. Amy Ricci and Vincent Turchetta Jr. turned in the required number of signatures and qualified for the ballot in that race. Alan Arthur Depalo had declared his candidacy for the seat, but did not return signatures.
School committee seats are nonpartisan. The rest of the committee incumbents – citywide representative Michael Traficante, Jeffrey Gale of Ward 1, Stephanie Giangrande Culhane of Ward 2, Domenic Fusco Jr. of Ward 3, committee chair Janice Ruggieri of Ward 5, and Daniel Wall of Ward 6 – will all seek re-election without opposition.
