On a bright, sunny afternoon, more than 180 students of Chester W. Barrows Elementary School recently took to the fields on Beachmont Avenue for a fun-filled, active, and unique walk-a-thon.
The fundraising event generated more than $2,000 from more than 250 sponsors. The proceeds generated from the Barrows walk-a-thon will help Parents & Teachers of Barrows (the “PTB”) pay for enrichment opportunities, cultural arts programs, field trips, and family-centered activities for all Barrows Elementary students as well as gestures of appreciation for the teachers and staff. Ongoing donations are always accepted.
Although the walk-a- thon has been an annual event, this year for the first time the course included four child-friendly obstacles. As the students walked, they encountered a “challenge” station that offered a fitness activity. The first station – the limbo – asked participants to walk under a jump rope. The next two stations were designed with hula hoops – including the “knee high-ups” and crawl-through hoops. The final obstacle required students to hop on one foot along a series of dots. Along the entire course, members of the PTB assisted teachers, served as safety coordinators and managed the obstacles. After a number of turns around the field, students celebrated with healthy snacks and refreshments. 1
