Big Brothers Big Sisters sees results from donation pick-up program upgrades

Posted

Recent changes to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State’s (BBBSOS) donation center are giving Rhode Island residents convenient, eco-friendly donating options – and results are already being seen.

BBBSOS receives donations through its donation centers, drop-off boxes and pick-up service, which offers a convenient, free-of-charge option for donors.

The latest upgrade, which BBBSOS community outreach coordinator George Marley called a “kind of getting with the times,” was the implementation of a new dialer system for pick-ups scheduled by phone.

The new system is capable of scheduling pick-ups in a more efficient manner than the previous system, allowing the operation to take on an increased load of donations.

The upgrade has already proven valuable.

“It ended up being so efficient that we are now going through a growth process, which is kind of amazing,” Marley said.

Residents who wish to schedule an at-home pick-up may call 401-921-2434 or visit www.bbbsos.org.

The second change BBBSOS has made is related to the quality of textiles it is now actively seeking in donation.

Participating in Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation’s (RIRRC) campaign to increase the recycling of unusable textiles, BBBSOS is now asking for any dry textile to be donated, regardless of how torn, tattered or stained.

While RIRRC doesn’t possess the capability to recycle the textiles itself, it has actively encouraged the recycling of organizations such as BBBSOS.

BBBSOS can recycle the unusable textiles through its partnership with Savers, providing an eco-friendly source of revenue while keeping the items out of the landfill.

The recent and continuing growth to BBBSOS’s donation operation has opened up new job opportunities within the non-profit.

Currently, BBBSOS is searching for a part time, non-CDL driver to operate its trucks and pick-up donations of clothing and small household items. The position is set to average 36 hours a week.

Those interested may contact Lori Viner at 401-921-2434, ext. 200.

(Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect that the recycling of textiles occurs through Savers, with RIRRC promoting the increased recycling.)
