The annual Needham Youth Classic track meet was held on July 22-23 with close to 500 athletes competing. The CLCF Panthers won the meet for the first time in their history, defeating the two-time defending champs, the Nova Track Club and the Northeast Indoor Classic champs, Metropolis. CLCF scored over 1000 points in this co-ed meet, with runner-up Nova scoring 744. Last year, the Panthers had finished third overall, losing to the Nitehawks Track Club and Nova.

CLCF had 34 athletes compete and all of them found a way to score points for their team, whether it be through field events or running events. They also set two meet records – Maia Riccio set for 9/10-year-old girls in the turbo javelin, throwing 63 feet, 4.5 inches. Ben Mancini set a record in the long jump for the 13/14-year-old boys by jumping 19 feet, 3.25 inches.

Matt and Zach Leavitt combined for five first-place finishes, with Matt winning the high jump, turbo javelin and softball throw, while his brother finished first in the 3000 and 1500 meter runs.

In addition to setting the long jump record, Mancini also won the triple jump for his age group. Other boys who did well were Zack Notarianni, two second-place finishes and three third-place finishes, Brandon Rios, who scored in 11 events and Alex Delnigro, who won the high, long and triple jumps for the 11/12-year-old boys. Other strong performers were Adam Koulibaly, Blake Santos and Colby Elwell.

For the girls, Lindsey Hobin (11/12) scored in seven events – 50, 100 and 200-meter runs, as well as the 80-meter hurdles, long jump, standing long jump and triple jump. Not to be outdone, her teammate Aydan Gulliver scored in six events. Other strong performers were Rachel Hobin, Sakeena Kahn, Cailyn McNamar, Penny Tejada and Antonia King.

The 2016 Panthers team came together and pushed and cheered one another during the two-day meet. The team rushed onto the track and infield to collect its first-place trophy, as well as taking the time to do a victory lap while carrying the trophy.
