Cannata goes 3-0, earns recognition

Posted

Cranston West alumna Tressa Cannata was selected as the Little East Conference’s player of the week on Monday after going 3-0 on the tennis court over the past week for Rhode Island College.

Cannata, who has mostly played in the fifth singles slot for the Anchorwomen this season, picked up wins in matches against opponents from Salve Regina, Salem State and Bridgewater State, with the latter triumph proving decisive in determining seeding for the upcoming LEC tournament.

The junior was up 3-2 against Bridgewater State’s Rachel Eramo in the third set when their match was suspended due to darkness last Wednesday, with their teams locked in a 4-4 stalemate.

When the match resumed on Monday afternoon, Cannata stormed out of the gate by holding serve to go up 4-2 before Eramo held her own serve and broke Cannata to even up the decider at 4-4.

Cannata then responded by breaking Eramo and holding serve once more to win the rubber set (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) and the match (5-4), with the result guaranteeing RIC the second seed and a first-round bye in the six-team conference tournament.

The Anchorwomen now await the outcome of Tuesday afternoon’s match between the just-vanquished Bridgewater State, who claimed the third seed, and sixth-seeded Worcester State, with the winner advancing to face RIC in the semifinals on Thursday.

Allen battles through

Former Cranston West standout Bobby Allen battled the conditions and his body last Saturday at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., to finish in seventh place.

Allen was the highest-finishing entrant representing UMass-Lowell, crossing the line in 25 minutes, 14.4 seconds on a course that was inundated by five inches of rain in as many days during the lead-up to the race.

In addition to the heavy going underfoot, the former Falcon was dealing with a cold, making Allen’s performance all the more remarkable.

Lambrese earns rookie honors again

For the second consecutive week, former Cranston West standout Courtney Lambrese has been picked as the Commonwealth Coast Conference’s Rookie of the Week while playing for the University of New England.

Lambrese finished a stretch that ran through Oct. 19 with 21 kills and a .421 hitting percentage, as well as three solo blocks and four block assists. She had five points on kills (.625) and 2.5 more on rejections against the Colonels, before tallying 6.5 points against the Monks. As Big Blue downed the Bobcats, 3-1, Lambrese's 11 winners (.526), two aces and two block assists were critical to the winning effort.
