Cranston native Jack Capuano will serve as an assistant coach for Team USA at the upcoming World Cup of Hockey, set for Sept. 17 through Oct. 1 in Toronto.
The news was announced via a press release from USA Hockey last Friday.
Capuano, who currently serves as the head coach of the New York Islanders, won’t be the only Rhode Island native behind the bench for the stars and stripes, as New Jersey Devils head coach and Warwick native John Hynes also got an assistant nod.
They’ll be joined by Head Coach John Tortorella (Boston, Mass.) and fellow assistants Mike Sullivan (Duxbury, Mass.), Scott Gordon (Easton, Mass.) and Phil Housley (South St. Paul, Minn.).
Capuano is currently in his sixth season as the Islanders’ head coach. In 2014-15, he led his squad to the franchise’s highest win total (47) and point total (101) since the 1983-84 season.
New York is well on its way to another playoff berth this season, too, as it’s currently in second in the Metropolitan Division and third in the Eastern Conference with a record of 24-15-6.
This isn’t the first time that Capuano has represented his country, instructing the USA Under-18 Select Team at the 2005 Five Nations Cup.
As for the upcoming World Cup, USA will be one of eight teams competing, with Canada, Czech Republic, Europe, Finland, North America, Russia and Finland rounding out the field.
General Managers of the eight teams have until March 2 to submit their initial 16-player rosters. They’ll then have to have their full 23-player rosters finalized by June 1.
