Chick-fil-A offers fresh, healthy food

It took them 47 years, but the popular Atlanta-based fast-food restaurant Chick-fil-A has finally made it to Rhode Island.

My grandson survives on their famous grilled chicken sandwich while working many hours in medical school in Philadelphia, and Florida friends say they eat there at least once a week.

We had an opportunity to check them out and understand why they are so popular.

Their menu is 100-percent trans fat and cholesterol free, and freshly prepared daily. A tour of the kitchen found it squeaky clean, with strict safety precautions in place.

We watched an employee prepare the fresh whole-breast chicken filets, each individually breaded by hand and cooked in peanut oil. Their popular cob salads ($8.15) are made fresh daily, in groups of 10. When five are sold, they make five more. The breakfast biscuits are made fresh each morning from scratch.

Unlike other unnamed fast food restaurants, all preparation is done individually, which makes the operation very labor-intensive.

I ordered the signature sandwich, the “#1 Chick-fil-A.” The meal comes with delicious waffle fries and a drink for $6.39; the sandwich alone costs $3.39.

Joyce chose the Spicy Chicken sandwich meal ($6.69), and was pleased that it really was spicy.

A side of Chick-fil-A grilled nuggets ($4.29 for eight, with a calorie count of 140) was a perfect addition. I dipped mine in their honey mustard sauce. The breaded nuggets almost double the calorie count.

Their iced tea and lemonade are made fresh with filtered water.

Chick-fil-A is open for breakfast from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m., and we can’t wait to try their Chick-n-Minis and Chicken Biscuits on those freshly made biscuits. Store hours are 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Chick-fil-A is closed on Sunday, a rarity for the fast-food industry. The decision was made in 1946 by owner Truet Cathy, who said it was as much practical as spiritual, giving employees the opportunity to rest and spend time with their families.

Chick-fil-A is located at 1500 Bald Hill Road in Warwick at the location “where Boston Market used to be.”

Eat in the air-conditioned restaurant or out on the patio, or get take-out. Drive-thru accounts for 60 percent of their business.

The phone number is 615-3423. Credit cards accepted.
