Many community organizations have pulled together recently for a very special little boy, Jaxon Marocco, who suffers from rare genetic disease called Niemann-Pick Type A.
Marocco is the grandson of the owners of Elmwood Sports, a local business loved and utilized by many who play sports in the city of Cranston.
To date, Glen Hills Elementary School dedicated this year’s annual “Penny Wars” fundraiser to Jaxon, joining several other community groups who have raised money or are currently doing so. At Cranston High School West, staff will be raising money with a dress-down day this week, and the CLCF softball team held their “Shine for Jax Homerun Derby and Walkathon” on May 9.
In a true show of community spirit, Cranston’s family-owned Minerva’s Pizza donated a pizza party to the winning class at Glen Hills Elementary. The Cranston Shaw’s supermarket at Chapel View donated the use of its Coinstar change machine for counting the money by refunding back the $98 in fees normally collected on the school’s total of just under $1,500, which was sorted and counted after school by a group of sixth-grade volunteers.
At the CLCF Girls’ Softball Homerun Derby and Walkathon, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung was among the many participants, and the Cranston police and fire departments donated both time and funds to the event, which raised almost $20,000.
Those interested in donating to fundraisers for Jaxon can participate by donating to the upcoming Cranston West dress-down day collection.
If interested, contact Deana Barlow or Savannah Zina at West for more information.
