Council hopeful shares recent cancer diagnosis, will continue bid

Lammis Vargas, a candidate for a citywide seat on the City Council, has made public her recent cancer diagnosis and says she will continue her campaign.

On Tuesday afternoon, Lammis released the following statement:

“Only days after announcing my candidacy for City Council and being endorsed by the Cranston City Democratic Committee, I became ill, had to be hospitalized and was diagnosed with APL Leukemia. I have always fought for what I believe in and will not let this turn of events determine my life. After speaking with my family and my physicians, I am confident that this type of cancer is beatable and will not impact my ability to campaign, meet the residents and serve our city. I look forward to earning the support of the people of Cranston and representing them on the City Council.”

A GoFundMe campaign, “Help Lammis Beat Leukemia,” has been set up to assist the family with the costs of medical care. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had raised $10,511, exceeding the $10,000 goal.

“We ask that you keep the Vargas family in your prayers, as Lammis has always been the one to bring positivity and light to all those she encounters,” reads a message on the GoFundMe page.

Vargas announced her candidacy in June and has since qualified for the November ballot.

“This is a great city, and I want to play a role in making it even greater by working to improve fiscal responsibility, city services and quality of life for all Cranston residents,” she said through the statement announcing her bid.

Vargas resides on Betsey Williams Drive. She and her husband, a Warwick police officer and Army Reserve veteran, have two children. She holds a bachelor’s degree in justice studies from Rhode Island College and is pursuing a master’s in public administration from Roger Williams University.

Vargas serves as a Cranston Housing Authority commissioner and works as director of unclaimed property in the office of General Treasurer Seth Magaziner. She additionally serves as a board member of Progreso Latino and has served on the boards of several other organizations.
