Taste of Garden City

The fourth annual Taste of Garden City will be held on Sept. 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Gazebo in Garden City Center. The cost is $15 per person.

Jeanne Evans and Bill Whitehead Jr. will provide entertainment, presenting the “Swinging Sounds of Broadway.” Accompanying their program will be Cranston’s own Bill Moretti on keyboard, Joe Holtzman on drums, and Peter Bodner on upright bass.

Wine & Dine Extravaganza

On Aug. 27, the MS Dream Center and Accessible RI will hold a Wine & Dine Extravaganza from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet.

The event will include entertainment, raffles, a silent auction, and a mystery wine and dine pairing. Tickets are $60 each or 10 for $500, and are tax deductible. To purchase tickets, contact Anne Delsignore at anne@msdreamcenter.org or 401-330-7470.

The MS Dream Center was founded in April 2010 with a mission of engaging all members of the MS community in purposeful activity, while promoting a spirit of camaraderie. Registration now open for Cranston Senior Games

The Cranston Senior Games will be held on Sept. 17 at Cranston High School West beginning at 9 a.m. Everyone 55 years or older is invited to participate. The registration fee is $15, and golf (Sept. 20 through Sept. 22) is $70 per person. Visit the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center, 1070 Cranston St., for registration forms.

Mayor’s picnic for senior residents

On Aug. 26, Mayor Allan Fung and the city of Cranston will hold the annual Mayor’s Picnic from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Don’t miss this annual event, which will include entertainment, games, and great friends.

Registration is required with a suggested donation of $3. Reservations have already begun, and may be made at the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. with Jean, the meal site manager. The menu includes lemonade, honey BBQ chicken, hot dog on a roll, tomato/cucumber salad, buttered corn, and watermelon.

CCAP to host golf tournament, awards dinner

CCAP will hold its Chip for Charity 9 Hole Golf Tournament and Community Awards Dinner honoring Mayor Allan Fung on Thursday, Sept. 15, at Harbor Light Country Club, Warwick Neck. Tickets are $70 per person, $130 per couple, and $625 for a table of 10. Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshop

The Cranston Senior Enrichment Center will be offering a program on management of chronic diseases from Aug. 26 to Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This is a free, six-session workshop for those age 60 and older. Participants will learn to manage chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and chronic pain. Information and support to manage chronic conditions is essential to living a better life. Upon successfully completing this program, participants will receive a workbook, relaxation CD, and gift certificate. Ocean State Toastmasters

Goodwill clothing bin

Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island has placed a clothing donation bin at Midas Cranston, located at 525 Reservoir Ave. Clothing and textiles may be donated even if they are torn or stained, as long as they are dry, clean, and odor-free. Donations of clothing and textiles to Goodwill help Rhode Island youth and adults with disabilities and other barriers to employment find their place in the work force. Free family movies at Mulligan’s Island

Mulligan’s Island is pleased to announce its family movie series lineup for 2016. Outdoor movies are a refreshing, fun way to spend a summer evening.

The movies will be shown on a big screen at the Mulligan’s Island Event Center, located at 1000 New London Ave. in Cranston.

The center opens one hour prior to show time. Seating is first come, first served. Lawn chairs and blankets are allowed. Please no umbrellas, tents, coolers, food, or drinks. Concessions will be available.

The movie line-up is as follows: “Inside Out” on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 7:15 p.m.; “Frozen” on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.; “Zootopia” on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m.; and a surprise movie event on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 6:15 p.m.

All movie titles, movie night contests, dates, and times are subject to change and are weather dependent.

Constituent Coffee

State Rep. Robert Lancia and his wife, Maryann, invite members of the community to attend end-of-the-month “Constituent Coffees.” The gatherings are held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Panera Bread in Cranston on the last Saturday each month, and are meant as a forum to discuss local issues over coffee. Tim White to speak at Senior Guild meeting

At the Cranston Senior Guild meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m., at Tamarisk Assisted Living, 3 Shalom Drive in Warwick, investigative reporter Tim White from Channel 12 will speak about fighting fraud and exposing corruption. Tim is the recipient of three New England Emmy Awards for investigative reporting. He was honored for a 2010 series of stories probing government waste in Rhode Island. He won his second Emmy for 2012 coverage of Providence’s troubled pension system. A 2014 probe into a lack of accountability at a local fire district led to his third Emmy honor. After White’s presentation, the Cranston Senior Guild will have a short meeting followed by refreshments and a raffle. All men and women ages 55 years and older are welcome to join. Host families needed

Consider hosting an international exchange student through AFSUSA. Each year, more than 2,300 students from 90 countries come to the U.S. to study in our high schools and live with host families. By hosting an AFS exchange student, you will begin to see the world differently. Profiles of available students who have been selected to come to our area are available by visiting afsusa.org/host-family/our-students. Maybe you would like to learn more about culture in Thailand, or want to open your home to a student from Portugal. Please take a few minutes to look at the student profiles. Any family interested in opening their homes to a study abroad student for the 2016-17 school year should contact JoAnne Hanrahan at jhanrahan@afsusa.org. Students will arrive for the school year on Sept. 8. The Cranston Senior Enrichment Center Social Services’ Division has announced outreach opportunities. Their community information specialist is available to speak to organizations about programs and services offered by the center, as well as state and federally funded programs available for seniors. Cruizin’ for a Cause

Every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Cruizin’ for a Cause is held at Denny’s, located at 1448 Atwood Ave. in Johnston. There is a $5 donation for each vehicle, and trophies will be awarded. Golden Crest summer concert series

Golden Crest Nursing Centre is sponsoring a summer concert series held on the outdoor patio of North Providence Union Free Library, located at 1810 Mineral Spring Ave. in North Providence. The first concert is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 17, with Robert Black, New England’s tribute artist. Enjoy music and dancing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Concerts are free and open to the public. Bring your own lawn chairs. Non-alcoholic beverages are allowed. There is plenty of free adjacent parking at North Providence High School. The second concert is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The “Fabulous” Tony Cerbo, will be performing. There is no rain date.
