Free bulky waste pickup

During the month of September, city residents will have the opportunity to have a limited number of bulky waste items picked up free of charge. Residents must call Waste Management at 800-972-4545 to schedule a pickup. Phone calls will be accepted starting Aug. 25 and continue through Sept. 23, with pickups beginning Sept. 1. Pickups are limited to one scheduled trip and up to three items per residential unit. The program does not include mattresses, construction debris, televisions of electronic goods, white goods, or any household trash that will fit in the regular bins or overflow bags. Registration now open for Cranston Senior Games

The Cranston Senior Games will be held on Sept. 17 at Cranston High School West beginning at 9 a.m. Everyone 55 years or older is invited to participate. The registration fee is $15, and golf (Sept. 20 through Sept. 22) is $70 per person. Visit the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center, 1070 Cranston St., for registration forms.

Langevin accepting applications for fall interns

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) is accepting applications for interns in his Rhode Island and Washington, D.C. offices for the fall of 2016. This unpaid program is open to civic-minded college students who are available for at least 10 hours per week. A qualified candidate will be well-organized, responsible and dependable and have strong oral and written communication skills. 

Responsibilities include answering phone calls, drafting constituent correspondence and supporting staff members on various projects. College credit is available, if approved by the institution.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island has announced that the Capital City Café Program’s lunch and evening meals will be provided by Encore Catering beginning Sept. 6. Encore Catering is a full-service catering company located in Warwick that has been in operation since 1978.

The program provides hot, nutritious meals to seniors throughout Providence and Cranston. The program has seven cafés in various locations throughout the city of Providence with one located in Cranston. Dining cafes are open Monday through Friday. All meals meet one-third of the dietary reference intake for seniors and are approved by a registered dietitian.

Taste of Garden City

The fourth annual Taste of Garden City will be held on Sept. 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Gazebo in Garden City Center. The cost is $15 per person.

Jeanne Evans and Bill Whitehead Jr. will provide entertainment, presenting the “Swinging Sounds of Broadway.” Accompanying their program will be Cranston’s own Bill Moretti on keyboard, Joe Holtzman on drums, and Peter Bodner on upright bass.

Tim White to speak at Senior Guild meeting

At the Cranston Senior Guild meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m., at Tamarisk Assisted Living, 3 Shalom Drive in Warwick, investigative reporter Tim White from Channel 12 will speak about fighting fraud and exposing corruption. Tim is the recipient of three New England Emmy Awards for investigative reporting. He was honored for a 2010 series of stories probing government waste in Rhode Island. He won his second Emmy for 2012 coverage of Providence’s troubled pension system. A 2014 probe into a lack of accountability at a local fire district led to his third Emmy honor. After White’s presentation, the Cranston Senior Guild will have a short meeting followed by refreshments and a raffle. All men and women ages 55 years and older are welcome to join. Walk for Animals

The Rhode Island SPCA will host its 14th annual Marvin Memorial Walk for Animals fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m. at Goddard State Park in Warwick.

The event will feature a one-mile walk through the beautiful wooded trails of Goddard State Park, dog costume and best pet trick contests, rock climbing wall, vendors, a caricaturist and photographer doing pet portraits, raffles, prizes for top fundraisers, and lunch.

Admission to the event is free. Friendly dogs welcome. All proceeds from the event will go towards helping the homeless animals at the Rhode Island SPCA by providing food, shelter, veterinary care, and a chance for a new home. Please visit rispca.com for more information.

Wine & Dine Extravaganza

On Aug. 27, the MS Dream Center and Accessible RI will hold a Wine & Dine Extravaganza from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet.

The MS Dream Center was founded in April 2010 with a mission of engaging all members of the MS community in purposeful activity, while promoting a spirit of camaraderie. Mayor’s picnic for senior residents

On Aug. 26, Mayor Allan Fung and the city of Cranston will hold the annual Mayor’s Picnic from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Don’t miss this annual event, which will include entertainment, games, and great friends.

Registration is required with a suggested donation of $3. Reservations have already begun, and may be made at the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. with Jean, the meal site manager. The menu includes lemonade, honey BBQ chicken, hot dog on a roll, tomato/cucumber salad, buttered corn, and watermelon.

CCAP to host golf tournament, awards dinner

CCAP will hold its Chip for Charity 9 Hole Golf Tournament and Community Awards Dinner honoring Mayor Allan Fung on Thursday, Sept. 15, at Harbor Light Country Club, Warwick Neck. Tickets are $70 per person, $130 per couple, and $625 for a table of 10. Goodwill clothing bin

Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island has placed a clothing donation bin at Midas Cranston, located at 525 Reservoir Ave. Clothing and textiles may be donated even if they are torn or stained, as long as they are dry, clean, and odor-free. Donations of clothing and textiles to Goodwill help Rhode Island youth and adults with disabilities and other barriers to employment find their place in the work force. Free family movies at Mulligan’s Island

Mulligan’s Island is pleased to announce its family movie series lineup for 2016. Outdoor movies are a refreshing, fun way to spend a summer evening.

The movies will be shown on a big screen at the Mulligan’s Island Event Center, located at 1000 New London Ave. in Cranston.

The center opens one hour prior to show time. Seating is first come, first served. Lawn chairs and blankets are allowed. Please no umbrellas, tents, coolers, food, or drinks. Concessions will be available.

The movie line-up is as follows: “Inside Out” on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 7:15 p.m.; “Frozen” on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.; “Zootopia” on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m.; and a surprise movie event on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 6:15 p.m.

All movie titles, movie night contests, dates, and times are subject to change and are weather dependent.

The Cranston Senior Enrichment Center Social Services’ Division has announced outreach opportunities. Their community information specialist is available to speak to organizations about programs and services offered by the center, as well as state and federally funded programs available for seniors.
