The Lemonade Stand to benefit MS Society

@T_Basic: For the fifth year in a row, The Lemonade Stand will be held April 26 at Park Avenue Auto, located at 880 Park Ave. Organizers are hoping to make the event the biggest and best yet. There will be a bounce house, face painting, a DJ, pony rides and much more, all to benefit the RI Multiple Sclerosis Society.

There will be a bake sale table, food and lots of raffle items, along with a festive atmosphere perfect for any family outing. The Lemonade Stand will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

They have also announced that one of the great raffle items include two tickets to the Louden, N.H., race in July, VIP tickets to the hospitality tent with the chance to meet Kyle Busch and a VIP tour of the pits (18+ for the pit tour). Also included in the raffle are a pair of Red Sox tickets, an iPad Mini 16GB, $75 gift certificates to Spain restaurant and Chapel Grill, a $150 gift certificate to United Ink Tattoos and a 24-inch flat screen TV just to name a few items. All raffle item tickets can be pre-purchased if you cannot make it on the actual date of the event.

The Lemonade Stand will also feature many great activities and entertainment, such as temporary tattoos, sand art, carnival-style games and door prize giveaways.

<*C>Shred It Day at Cranston Public Library

@T_Basic: The Cranston Public Library will be hosting its Annual Shred IT Day on Saturday, April 19 from 9 a.m. to noon. This event will take place in the parking lot of the Central Library located at 140 Sockanosset Cross Road. Up to four boxes of materials are allowed at a time. People may go back in line. Come and enjoy a free cup of coffee while you wait. Library staff will also be on hand to sign people up for a library card if they don’t already have one.

<*C> Whole Foods hosting electronic recycling event

@T_Basic: Whole Foods Market will host an electronic recycling event at their Garden City location in conjunction with Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island on Wednesday, April 23.

The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and all are invited to drop off old or unwanted electronics. Items that will be accepted are computers, laptops, peripherals, audio and video equipment, electronics, copiers/printers and small household appliances.

Due to restrictions with the recycling partners and increased costs associated with proper disposal, only tube televisions accompanied by a $10 donation will be accepted.

<*C>Calling all volunteers

@T_Basic: The members and friends of the Oaklawn Grange are calling on community volunteers of all ages to help with the cleanup of the Woodland Trails, the gazebo area off Wilbur Avenue and surrounding streets. Lunch will be provided for all volunteers. The cleanup will be held on May 10. Volunteer cleanup hours are between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., and high school students, scouts and other community groups are welcome to join in that day.

<*C>Spring fashion show

@T_Basic: There will be a Spring Fashion Show at Theater 82, presented by the Artists’ Exchange on Rolfe Street from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on April 27. The event will feature community children and young models ages 4-14 who will strut their runway talents while showcasing the current seasonal styles and accessories for girls and boys.

This first Spring Fashion Show will feature the latest and greatest fashion trends from Cranston’s local boutiques. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

<*C>Charity by Design event with Alex and Ani

@T_Basic:The Cranston Public Library Association will be holding a Charity by Design fundraising event with Alex and Ani on Wednesday, April 23. The event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alex and Ani store at 200 Chapel View Blvd. in Cranston. Fifteen percent of all sales will go to benefit the Cranston Public Library Summer Reading Program. There will be free snacks and punch at this event.

The Cranston Public Library Association is a non-profit formed to raise funds to support the library and its programs. People interested in attending can RSVP by emailing central@cranstonlibrary.org by April 21.

<*C>Summer jobs available for teens

@T_Basic: Summer job applications will be available during regular business hours in the Parks and Recreation Office through May 2. Applications also will be available on the Parks and Recreation website.

Applicants must be at least 15 years old at the time of hire and be a Cranston resident. Positions available are playground counselor, pool attendant, pool maintenance and lifeguard.

<*C>Artists’ Exchange is having a Y-ART Sale

@T_Basic: Drawing inspiration from the community yard sale, and injecting a boost of creative energy, Artists’ Exchange, a non-profit arts collaborative on Rolfe Square in Cranston, proudly presents the “Y-ART Sale.” This event will be held on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Artists’ Exchange, located at 50 Rolfe Square in Cranston.

Part yard sale, part community arts event, the Y-ART Sale will feature a wide range of artisan vendors, a gallery showcase focusing on art made from reclaimed and re-purposed objects, live demos, and food.

The gallery showcase will feature a medley of items that exemplify the art of re-use, with the intention of illustrating the potential of items that might otherwise be discarded. Handcrafted, one-of-a-kind items will also be available for purchase in abundance as the Y-ART Sale will also feature numerous vendors and artists. <*C>Academic News & Notes

@T_Basic: Bates College student Erik Bou of Cranston delivered a research-based presentation at this year’s Mount David Summit, the college’s annual campus-wide celebration of student academic achievement held in late March.

Bou, who is majoring in biology at Bates, delivered a presentation titled “Variability of Growth Line Deposition and Growth of the Common Cockle (Cerastoderma edule) and Effect of Temperature in the Pool of Virkie, Mainland, and Shetland.” His research was supervised by William Ambrose, professor of biology at Bates. Bou, the son of Chan Saab and By Kan of Cranston, is a 2010 graduate of Cranston High School East.

Congratulations to Lauren Abbenante, grade 12, who was been named to the Worcester Academy honor roll and headmaster’s list for the second trimester of the 2013-14 school year. The honor represents the achievements that each student has earned through academic excellence, challenge and personal growth.

<*C>Big Play Day

@T_Basic: Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State will host a “Big Play Day” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 19. The event will feature free sports clinics from Bryant University athletes, crafts and refreshments. Representatives from Bryant’s soccer and football teams will be on hand to run free clinics on the university’s Smithfield Campus. Participation in “Big Play Day” is free. <*C>Adult Easter Egg Hunt

@T_Basic: The Rhode Island Shriners, located at One Rhodes Place in Cranston, will host their fourth annual Adult Easter Egg Hunt on Friday, April 18.

The 21-plus event begins at 8 p.m., with 5,000 eggs filled with prizes. Proper identification is required, and tickets – priced at $10 – must be purchased in advance by contacting Hillary Williamson at 401-467-7102 or hilliary.williamson@gmail.com.

Participants are asked to bring their own flashlight and bag, and are invited to search for eggs at their own risk.

<*C>Did You Know?

@T_Basic: According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest Easter egg ever made was just over 25 feet high and made of chocolate and marshmallow. The egg weighed 8,968 pounds and was supported by an internal steel frame.
