Cranston East Marching Band takes another New England championship

The Cranston High School East Thunderbolt Marching Band has once again earned the title of USBands Group II Open New England Champions.

The championship event was held in New Britain, Conn., on Oct. 31. The band also captured the award for Best Music. There are 50 students in band and the Emerald Encore Color Guard.

“The 2015 edition of the East Band has an exceptional work ethic. The student leadership has taken on more responsibility this year, including the role of instructor. We are fortunate to have the largest number of new members we have had in years and with that comes a lack of experience. However, the veteran members have worked tirelessly with our talented new members to catch them up to playing at the level of a high school musician. I am continuously amazed at the maturity level of our leadership and how they have earned respect. This has made a difference in the development of our ensemble. We could not have accomplished what we did this season without it. With the restoration of the district’s elementary instrumental program and the commitment of our current students, the future is a bright one for the East Band,” band director Mark Colozzi said.

“These kids work hard every day, they practice in the heat, rain and cold. They are at our games playing their hearts out alongside the athletes. They deserve the recognition and achievements they earn. Mark and his crew work diligently with the kids. They treat them with respect and show true leadership and it reflects in the kids’ behaviors both on and off the field,” East Principal Sean Kelly said.

The students are not the only ones involved in the band. Their families also play a very large part in the success. They help with setting up and breaking down of props, driving trucks, working concessions stands, and many other tasks.

“They worked so hard this season and it showed with that performance and it was a fantastic way to end the competition season,” said band parent Laurie Bussman, whose daughter Jenna is part of the Emerald Encore Color Guard.
