Cranston East seniors display artistic talents

For more than 20 years, the senior art exhibit has been a tradition and part of the curriculum at Cranston High School East. For the past five years, it has been held at the Artists’ Exchange on Rolfe Square.

“This is a great location for the show since it is right in the middle of our community and many students volunteer or take classes there. The staff here has been so helpful and supportive,” said Mary Ann Schultheis, an art teacher at East and coordinator of the event.

The exhibit opened on Thursday, May 12, with a reception catered by the students and their families.

The work for this exhibit has been produced by Schultheis’ students over the last four years. There is a mix of drawings, paintings, prints, collages, scratchboard, and assemblage.

“My students worked collaboratively on creating an invitation for the exhibit. They also were tasked with choosing and matting the work as well as hanging the show. They produced binders that tell more about themselves as artists. It has been a challenging and rewarding learning experience for them,” she said.

East Principal Sean Kelly was impressed by the quality of work produced by the students.

“I am always amazed and a little jealous of the talent these students possess. Their dedication and creativity are but a few of the qualities that will make them successful in their futures,” he said.

The seniors who displayed are Angel Cajigas-Arbelo, Ainsley Campbell, Saiya Chik, Chrissna Chum, Genna Companatico, Brady Curran, Carla Dominguez, Cynthia Gatua, Donita Irwin, Isabel Nagy, Marissa Nelson, Soreyane San, and Alexandra Santos.

All of the work is available to view at the Artists’ Exchange, 50 Rolfe Square, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until May 26. 1
