Cranston students are ‘DStrong’

Dorian Murray is an eight year-old student from Westerly who is battling a rare form of terminal pediatric cancer. At age four, Murray was diagnosed with stage four cancer for the first time, and he’s been a fighter ever since.

Shortly after the arrival new year, and right around the same time as his eighth birthday, Dorian and his family received dire news about his current condition. Together, they opted to stop treatments that would no longer be able to help him, and instead they began to focus on the time they had left together.

It was at that time Dorian expressed a wish to his parents – before he went to heaven, he’d like to be famous. He specifically mentioned China as a place where he wanted to be known.

With the aid of social media, Dorian’s wish went viral. Within days, the hashtag #DStrong spread widely, with people around the world taking photos holding signs of support.

From China to Australia, Lebanon to Japan, Dorian’s story began to make headlines, alerting people everywhere in the world to his fight and his perseverance, which also represents the fight of children and families battling pediatric cancer everywhere.

In Rhode Island, Jan. 20 was declared #DStrong Day, with Dorian and his family on hand for the reading of the proclamation in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Sports teams, celebrities, and even the Beluga whales from Mystic Aquarium continue to show their support for Dorian on a daily basis with texts, tweets, visits, photos, and the ever-present #DStrong.

Here in Cranston, faculty, staff, and students everywhere are letting Dorian know that they, too, are standing alongside Dorian and his family through their fight, and that they are proud of his strength and perseverance. Schools across the city have been taking their own #DStrong photos for Dorian, often wearing his signature color blue, letting him know that he is indeed, famous in Cranston.
