Date set for 2nd Annual Brian Moretti Hockey Classic

Posted

On Saturday, May 2, the 2nd Annual Brian Moretti Hockey Classic will be played at the Cranston Veterans Memorial Ice Rink.

Moretti, who grew up playing hockey in Cranston and played at Cranston West, passed away suddenly at the age of 26 years old in March of 2014. He was a fun-loving, energetic young man whose personality lit up a room. He was one of the most caring individuals and beloved by everyone in the community. Although his life was cut short, he left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

When Moretti’s good friend, Matt Brannon, who is an assistant coach for the Cranston West hockey team, was thinking of a way to continue Moretti’s legacy, conducting an annual hockey game made the most sense.

“Brian loved hockey, and when we saw last year how many people crammed into the rink to show their love and support for his legacy, it validated the whole reason why we do it,” Brannon said. “I couldn’t think of a better way to honor Brian than to gather his friends and family in a place that he grew up in and loved.”

There will be a $5 admission charge at the door, with free admittance for all children under the age of 14.

There will also be some great prizes raffled off, which were generously donated by local businesses. Additionally, Brian Moretti apparel will also be available for purchase.

All proceeds from the game will go directly to the Brian Moretti Scholarship Fund.

The Brian Moretti Scholarship Fund was established to pay tribute to Brian’s legacy and is awarded to a graduating senior from Cranston West that demonstrates a lot of the qualities that Brian had – good academic standing, involvement with community service, involvement in sports and being a role model for others. This year, the recipient of the Brian Moretti scholarship will be announced during the hockey game.

The teams will be comprised of family members, friends and former teammates of Moretti.

After the event, the Thirsty Beaver in Cranston will open its doors to the players. Ed Brady, the owner of the Thirsty Beaver, has been generous enough to donate food to all players that will participate.

After a successful event last year, Brannon and all who are involved are hoping for even greater support this year.

Those looking to make a donation or donate raffle prizes can contact Brannon at mbrannon8812@gmail.com. Another way to donate is through the Rhode Island Foundation for the Brian Moretti Scholarship Fund. The Rhode Island Foundation is located at 1 Union Station, Providence, R.I., 02903.
