Delaware stays hot with second straight win

Delaware’s Middletown Odessa Townsend Little League has sent teams to the 9/10 Eastern Regional in Cranston, R.I., for three years running.

After a tough start for this year’s team, the 2014 M.O.T. all-stars are making themselves right at home.

The Delaware state champs lost their opener 3-2 to Pennsylvania on Saturday but have come back with two straight impressive victories. Delaware ran past New York 12-4 on Monday and topped Berlin, Md., 13-1 on Monday.

“The boys I think were a little tense in the first game,” said Delaware manager Shayne Timmons. “They just loosened up and started hitting the baseball.”

Delaware is now 2-1 in pool play, one of three teams in the Mid-Atlantic with two victories. It has a key match-up with 2-1 New Jersey on Thursday at 11 a.m., that could potentially decide a berth in the Mid-Atlantic championship game. Pennsylvania, who moved to 2-0 on Monday, will also likely be in the mix.

For Delaware, the surge began with the big win over New York. Locked in a 2-2 tie, the team delivered a seven-run fourth inning and never looked back. Collin Jenkins and Jake Blair finished with three hits each to lead the charge.

On Tuesday, it was more of the same. Sean Smith, the second batter of the game, hit a double and scored on a double by Evan Bouldin. That was the only run Delaware scored in the first, but it blew the game open with another seven-run inning, just like the day before.

This one came in the second. Shane Emory led off with a single and Zak Sophy walked. A throwing error on a bunt by Brendan Timmons allowed both runners to score. After a hit batsman, the parade began in earnest. Smith doubled, Blair singled, Bouldin singled, Aidan Deakins singled and Emory delivered a sacrifice fly. When the dust settled, Delaware led 8-0.

“Everybody was hitting the ball well and hitting it hard,” Shayne Timmons said. “They were running the bases well. That was the key.”

The Maryland squad, which had lost to New Jersey in its only previous tournament action, tried to keep up with the early onslaught. After reliever Kellen Catrino ended Delaware’s big inning, Maryland loaded the bases in the bottom of the second on a single by Ashton Snelsire and walks to Brenner Gursky and Evan Truitt. But Deakins, the Delaware starter, was undeterred. He struck out the next three batters on just 11 total pitches to end the threat.

“Aidan took control of the game early,” Timmons said. “When he does that, he’s very hard to hit. He threw the ball well.”

Delaware added four runs in the third thanks to a five walks, a hit by Blair and a catcher’s interference call. In the fourth, Delaware tacked on one more as Smith doubled and scored on a Bouldin base hit.

Maryland scored its lone run in the third on an RBI single by Truitt, but reliever Andrew Fasteson escaped further trouble. He then struck out two in a perfect bottom of the fourth, ending the game by mercy rule.

It was another successful day for the Delaware contingent.

“This is our third year in a row up here,” Timmons said. “We’ve done some pretty good things in Middletown. We try to do things right.”

They hope it continues Thursday.

“We’re going to try and pitch well and stay fundamentally sound,” Timmons said. “If we do that, we’ll be okay.”

Maryland has two pool-play games remaining. It plays New York at 2 p.m. on Wednesday and Pennsylvania at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
