Double talk from Rix

Posted

To the Editor:

On June 4, the Ward 2 Democratic Committee, in collaboration with retiring incumbent Ward 2 City Councilor Thomas “TC” Chadronet, announced Mr. Jeremy Rix as the handpicked successor for the Ward 2 City Council seat. By announcing their endorsement of Mr. Rix ahead of the September 13 Democratic Primary, the “Establishment” is once again trying to influence how voters cast their ballots.

Having accepted the endorsement in a June 6 press release, Mr. Rix has clearly indicated that his political goals align with the failed policies of entrenched city officials.

Now more than ever, politics as usual is not what our city needs. Continuing policies that have led to small businesses closing and schools consolidating at the expense of our students is unacceptable. I refuse to let our city suffer at the hands of politicians trying to carry on their own legacies.

Of course, Mr. Rix will deny this. He will highlight his previous political experience and role in the founding of the Warwick Progressive Democrats in 2013. This, he will proclaim, is proof that he is not an establishment candidate. But the informed voter should question the narrative Mr. Rix is forcing upon them. Why would a candidate, who aligns himself with a left leaning caucus in the state, accept the endorsement of established candidates? The Rhode Island Progressive Democrats clearly state on their webpage that Democrats in Rhode Island are “closet Republicans.” It is the group’s goal to force the Democratic Party to the left.

So why is Mr. Rix accepting donations and logistical support from the extreme left one day, and then endorsements from the establishment the next? I may not be as well versed in political double talk as Mr. Rix but something does not add up. Running for Ward 2 City Council is not a game for me like it clearly is for Mr. Rix. I am running for City Council in Ward 2 because I love my city. It is a city that I have been active in for decades; I grew from being a student athlete at Pilgrim to volunteering as President of the West Side Little League. With your

help, I will grow into a City Councilor that Ward 2 can be proud of. I am not doing this for the establishment. I am doing this for my son, my niece and you. My name is Sean Rainey and I hope on September 13 you will turn out for a man who wants the best for Warwick, not a man who views city council as a stepping stone to further his career.

It is unfortunate that Mr. Rainey finds it necessary to tear someone else down in order to build himself up. From all accounts, Jeremy is a hard working, bright, kind and respectful Warwick native who wants to serve his City and neighbors. I would be concerned if Jeremy was NOT seeking support from various groups. Our elected representatives are supposed to represent a wide range of constituents and work hard to find common ground to improve our City. Based on this editorial, it appears Mr. Rainey is ill suited for the position of City Councilor. Perhaps he should consider volunteering for a certain presidential candidate who has premised his campaign not on his own merits but on putting others down.

Hey Sean, do you think you'll get votes from sour grapes? Maybe people endorsed Jeremy because he's the best candidate. He's a smart lawyer and has been involved in the community. Had over 100 people at his fundraiser last night. Tons of support from regular people in the district.

People should vote for you because you played sports at Pilgrim and coach in the Little League? Perhaps Jeremy is so qualified that two opponents in the last election have endorsed him.

How long have you been a registered democrat?

I would have to say that we have officially entered the silly season. To imply that Jeremy who has acknowledged support for Democratic progressive principles and in fact helped create a local organization to promote Progressive Democratic viewpoints is disingenuous for accepting the Democratic Ward Committee endorsement is total nonsense. Obviously, Mr. Rainey knows the value of the endorsement since he sought it himself but the committee unanimously selected Jeremy Rix. This isn't double talk at all. Winning the endorsement is not an abandonment of his principles but confirmation he is the right person to represent the people of Ward 2.

    Mr. Rainey,

It's interesting that someone with your moral compass feels qualified to question Jeremy's integrity. Jeremy is an excellent candidate and more than fit for the position. I hope being a "student athlete" prepared you to be a gracious loser once Jeremy wins the campaign.

Ahh, the "anti establishment" rhetoric. Must be election season. I could wax on and elaborate exactly why Mr. Rainey has completely missed the mark, but since his "I'm not a politician so elect me as your next politician" rant was so obviously rooted in nonsense, I can sum it up quite simply. If Mr.Rainey is truly "anti establishment" then I invite him to seek the legal counsel of a Pharmacist, convince his mechanic to perform his next surgery and ask the dish washer at his favorite restaurant to prepare his next meal. Here's some free advice, Mr Rainey. If you are not a politician, then for the love of your own City, please stay out of politics. Warwick thanks you in advance.

Ma'am, my advice to you is to take some time for yourself and focus on realigning your morals. I would vote for Rix over you on manners alone.

After reading this I can't help but feel like Mr. Rainey is an unqualified applicant begging for a chance at a job that he has no resume for. Why would the voters of any district elect someone that has absolutely no experience to represent them? Oh wait I forgot you were already the president.... of a little league. Look you seem like an alright guy but you are way out of your league here. Mr. Rix is a polished candidate with morals, intellect, and the intestinal fortitude to do the right thing not the easy thing. This is much more than I can say for you sir. One of the lines that stuck out to me in your letter was "With your help I will grow into a city councilor that Ward 2 can be proud of." When adults turn out for elections we are not looking for the next boy to grow up into an elected official. We are looking for strong men and women who know what they stand for and furthermore what their district stands for. Go back to running little leagues and let the adults handle the politics.

P.S. Sorry to Rainey on your parade

P.P.S. I have a son that is a real pain in the butt. Got any space on those teams so I can get him out of the house this summer?

It is good to see the silly season has begun......let's have Mr Rix and Rainey tell the voters in Ward 2 how they will fix the $600 unfunded pension and healthcare benefits for city workers.

The tax increases just received in the mail for your property are outrageous so let them both tell enlighen us how they will lower them. They are both Vella-Wilkinson disciples and we all know she has done nothing to address our runaway expenses,so it will be interesting to see if they agree or disagree with Wikinson's approach of doing nothing.

What's silly about this season is the large infestation of caterpillars in the area. What's not silly, or "outrageous" is progressive tax reform that has had meaningful influence in our community. I collected over $600 in an inter-office lottery pool the other day.

    To the Sean,

You remind me of rex ryan and the new york jets using the media to try and shake up the patriots locker room in order to beat them. it never worked for them and it won't work here; it screams desperation and that you've run out of options. Literally nothing wrong with seeking support from different groups and you're doing the exact same thing you're accusing mr. Rix of. Serious question: do you love Warwick as much as you love your wife? You're the last person to question someone's integrity.
