East's Camilo brings home silver
West thrower Ly top finisher on girls' side
LEANNA LY

Cranston East senior Angel Camilo has been reminded the last few weeks that anything can happen in the hurdles. He won the Suburban Division championship on Feb. 2, finishing the 55-meter race in 7.9 seconds. The next week, at the Class A championship, he notched the same time but found himself in fourth place.

On the biggest stage of all at Saturday’s state meet, Camilo did what he could do and bettered his time, but he was reminded again that it wasn’t all up to him. La Salle senior Nyuanru Ben set a new meet record and won the hurdles in 7.67 seconds. Camilo took second in a time of 7.85.

“I could have done a little bit better,” Camilo said. “My lead leg wasn’t really where it was supposed to be, but sometimes you have an off day and sometimes you have an on day. Anything can happen in the hurdles. You lose a little momentum and that’s the race right there.”

Though he was disappointed, Camilo was still the top local performer at the meet and the only scorer among Cranston boys. On the girls’ side, West junior Leanna Ly was the only medalist. She placed sixth in the shot put.

Camilo was hoping to bring home East first indoor track gold medal since 2003, when Rob Brown won the 600. Camilo and Ben sat atop the seedings with the same 7.6 mark, but it was Ben who took the title.

Camilo ran a 7.97 in the prelims to rank third, while Ben was at 7.87. In the finals, Ben’s 7.67 bested the previous meet record by .02 seconds.

“Nyuanru – he deserved it,” Camilo said. “He had a great season. I’m not bitter about it. He deserved it.”

Camilo hopes to get another crack at Ben at New Englands and during the outdoor season.

“I’m coming for him,” Camilo said. “Outdoor, and even if I seem him at New Englands, hopefully I can get him.”

Camilo was one of two competitors for the East boys. Jack Mortimer ran the 600 and came up with a strong performance to finish ninth. He crossed the line in 1:29.66. South Kingstown’s Zach Campo won the race in a new meet record time of 1:21.91.

For the West boys, Kenny Teng was the top performer. The junior finished ninth in the high jump and 14th in the long jump. He also competed in the hurdles, where he finished 13th in the prelims.

Also for the Falcons, Brandon McDonnell finished 13th in the 55-meter dash prelims, Charlie McLaughlin grabbed 14th in the 600, and Jarrod Terry took 16th in the high jump. The 4x200 relay team of Charlie McLaughlin, Anthony St. Laurent, Matthew Downing and McDonnell finished 11th.

Ly was Cranston’s top finisher on the girls’ side. The junior had already placed fifth in the shot put at the Bayha Division championship and fourth in the Large Schools class championship. This time, she outdid both of those performances by throwing 32 feet, 11.75 inches. That was good for a sixth-place medal. Exeter/West Greenwich’s Victoria Ebert won the event with a throw of 35-07.75.

Junior Allie Hackett was the other top performer for the Falcons, taking seventh in the 1,500 and eighth in the 1,000. Junior Julia Smith added an 11th-place finish in the 600 and Tatiana Abrantes took 18th in the dash prelims.
