Edward J. Ryan, (Retired Captain, Cranston P.D.), age 86, of Redwood Drive, Cranston, died on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center in Providence. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth A. (McCarthy) Ryan.

Born in Providence, a son of the late John F. Ryan (former Chief, East Greenwich Police Dept.), and Florence (Valentine) Ryan, he was a life-long Cranston resident. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Ryan served on the Cranston Police Department for 33 years, retiring as a Captain in 1984. From 1984–1994 he was employed as a Child Protective Investigator for the RI Department of Children, Youth, & Families.

Mr. Ryan was a member of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, the Commissioned Police Officers Association of RI, the Cranston Police Department Retirees Association, and the American Federation of State, County, & Municipal Employees.

He is survived by a son, Kevin M. Ryan, Esq. and his wife, Colleen P. Ryan of Framingham, Massachusetts; a granddaughter, Maureen Q. Ryan; and a brother, John F. Ryan, Jr. and his wife, Barbara M. Ryan of Warwick. He was the brother of the late Vincent W. Ryan and Florence V. Metcalf.

His funeral will be held today, October 7, at 8:45 a.m. from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Church, 15 Garden Court, Cranston. Burial with military honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
