Ex-Falcons contributing for RIC women’s lacrosse

The women’s lacrosse team at Rhode Island College may be full of youth, but an experienced native of Cranston is providing the Anchorwomen with some sorely-needed leadership this spring.

Cranston West alumna Jessica Ricci is one of only a pair of upperclassmen on the team this season, and, as a result, has had to take up much of the slack in terms of on-field contributions.

The ex-Falcon currently leads the team with 21 goals, which includes a pair of five-goal hauls against Sweet Briar on March 9 and Johnson and Wales on March 30.

In addition to finding the net, Ricci has also found time to play the role of provider, assisting on five tallies to date, connecting with fellow senior Danielle Landon on four occasions.

As Ricci’s collegiate lacrosse career is winding down, the opposite is true for fellow Cranston West graduates Erin Durigan, Allison Smedberg and Toni Montanaro, with all three seeing significant playing time in their freshmen seasons.

Durigan and Smedberg have each scored a goal, while Montanaro has picked up nine ground balls and seven draw controls.

In fact, Durigan’s first collegiate goal was assisted by Ricci in the dying embers of RIC’s April 1 away trip to Eastern Connecticut in a somewhat symbolic passing of the torch.

Despite the best efforts of the quartet of Cranston West products in the Rhode Island College lineup, the quest for victory has proven futile, with the Anchorwomen crashing to defeat in all seven of their games thus far in 2015.

The next attempt to break through into the win column comes on Thursday evening, as RIC hits the road to lock horns with the Lancers of Worcester State in a non-conference tilt under the lights.
