Falcons finding their way

After some early-season growing pains, the Cranston West softball team looks like it has finally found its footing.

The Falcons are back to .500 after an 0-2 start, defeating Mount St. Charles and Chariho on consecutive days last week to even their record at 2-2.

West defeated Mount 11-5 on Thursday before coming back on Friday to beat Chariho 6-2. The Falcons were in position to keep the streak going on Tuesday, but their game with winless Barrington was postponed due to inclement weather.

Against the Mounties, West fell behind 3-0 in the third inning before rallying for four runs in the home half. Mount tied the score in the top of the fifth, but the Falcons broke things open with a five-run fifth and a two-run sixth. West ended up with 10 hits.

Alexis Plumley went the distance on the mound to earn her first varsity win in a West uniform.

The following day, Plumley picked up the victory again in a complete-game effort. West once again piled up 10 hits, and it turned a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead with four runs in the third inning. The Falcons never trailed from there.

The team’s defense has also been strong during the streak, as it has made just three errors total during the two games.

West picks up first win since 2012

Both teams are making progress, but the Cranston West and Cranston East girls’ lacrosse teams have struggled to pick up wins in the early going.

The Falcons, though, have something to celebrate, as they picked up their first win since 2012 on Thursday with a 9-8 decision over North Kingstown. They are 1-3 so far, while the ’Bolts are still winless at 0-3. Last season, West didn’t win a game.

West began the season 0-3 before finally breaking into the win column against the Skippers. It was a relief for the Falcons, who had already suffered two close losses – an 11-9 defeat to Prout and an 8-7 defeat to South Kingstown.

In the win over NK, Courtney Lambrese and Tarah Okolowitcz had four goals apiece, and Abbey Torres added one. Taylor Koretsky made 11 saves.

East, which has lost to Narragansett, Classical and Portsmouth this season, was scheduled to take on winless Tiverton on Wednesday, with the results unavailable at press time. It will have another chance at a win when it travels to winless Mt. Hope.
