Falcons outpace Huskies

The Cranston West swim teams picked up victories over Mt. Hope on Monday afternoon at Park View Middle School.

The boys’ team defeated the Huskies by a score of 55-36, as Pat Gendreau, Sai Kamsani and Didier Ferland-Haroun each won two individual events while also swimming on two winning relays.

It was a little bit closer on the girls’ side, as they edged Mt. Hope 52-37. The Falcons were paced by freshman Haley McCrystal, who won two individual events and swam on a pair of winning relay teams. Emily Manzi, Lauryl Hargreaves and Hannah Lee also had outstanding meets, chipping in with one individual title and two relay victories apiece.

The boys dominated from start to finish, taking first place in nine of 11 events.

Individually, Gendreau won the 50 free and 100 breaststroke, Ferland-Haroun won the 500 free and 200 individual medley and Kamsani took first in the 100 free and 100 butterfly.

Those three swimmers also combined with Keevan Winters to win the 200 medley relay and Mike Pontarelli to win the 400 free relay.

The team of Winters, Matt Fyrer, Corey Biello and Nick Psikakos rounded out West’s first-place finishes, winning the 200 free relay.

Mt. Hope only got two wins for the meet – Boris Apple in the 100 backstroke and Alan Aguiar in the 200 free.

The Huskies would make it a bit more interesting on the girls’ side, though.

The Falcons would win seven of the 11 events, with Mt. Hope getting victories from Cassidy Allen in the 50 free and 200 individual medley, Elaina DeRiso in the 200 free and the team of DeRiso, Allen, Kerrie Larson and Meg O’Brien in the 200 free relay.

But the Falcons had too much depth, as McCrystal won the 500 free and 100 butterfly, Hargreaves won the 100 free, Manzi won the 100 backstroke and Lee took first in the 100 breaststroke.

Those four would team up to claim victories in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay, as well.

The girls’ team improved to 3-1 with the win, while the boys’ clinched their first victory of the season, boosting their record to 1-1 in Division III.

Both teams will be back in action on Friday when they host Classical at 4:30 p.m. at Park View.
