Former Cranston West volleyball standout Courtney Lambrese was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Rookie of the Week at the University of New England.
The freshman averaged 2.60 per set and hit a solid .357 over 10 sets of action in a 2-1 week for the Nor’easters. Lambrese opened the week with back-to-back eight-kill efforts in a 3-1 win over Saint Joseph’s of Maine and in a 3-1 loss to Southern Maine. She added four digs and three blocks in the USM contest. The newcomer closed out the week with 10 kills, five digs and three blocks against Maine Maritime.
Lambrese has had a big impact in her freshman campaign, ranking third on the team in kills and second in aces.
The Nor’easters are 7-12 on the season.
Cannata helps
RIC to fast start
The Rhode Island College women’s tennis team has stormed off to a 10-1 start to the season, and Cranston West alum Tressa Cannata is one reason why the Anchorwomen have been almost perfect this autumn.
The junior ex-Falcon has compiled a 9-2 record in singles play, with the only blemish coming in RIC’s match versus Curry on Sept. 9, where she retired during her match’s first set due to illness. Cannata bounced back from the momentary setback to reel off five straight victories, with the four triumphs coming in straight sets.
Stanton assists in Rams’ conference opener
Former Cranston West standout Ariana Stanton played a key role in Rhode Island’s 1-0 overtime triumph against Saint Joseph’s on Friday night, assisting on Samantha Leyh’s match-winner five minutes into the extra session.
Stanton crossed the ball into the 18-yard box, with the sphere finding Leyh’s forehead for her fifth goal of the season and thus enabling the Rams to win their conference opener for the first time since 2007.
The win extended the Rhody eleven’s winning streak to five, which came to an end two days later courtesy of a 1-1 draw versus George Mason.
