Friendly competition combines literacy, art at Garden City School

A VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR: The preschool students’ door won the primary grades award for being most closely aligned with the book as they re-created Eric Carle’s “Very Hungry Caterpillar” for the contest.

CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER: Dr. Judith Lundsten congratulates sixth-grader Sharon Wu on her part in decorating the classroom door for “The Westing Game.” Wu painstakingly created an origami flag, folding many pieces of paper together to create the door decoration.

A door-decorating contest took place last week at Garden City School in honor of Reading Week.

The classrooms had to decorate their classroom doors to resemble a book cover, said Principal Tonianne Napolitano. Each classroom picked their own book to replicate and the doors are being judged in several categories. The older grades, in particular, really took ownership of this project.

Cranston Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Judith Lundsten visited the school at the end of the week for a door tour and served as the judge, meeting students and taking notes as she went.

Certificates were given out to each winning classroom after the winners were announced.
