Cranston West girls’ tennis standout Angela Gemma qualified for the singles state tournament recently, and won her first match before being eliminated in the Round of 16.

Gemma, one of the top players in Division II and West’s No. 1, played Bay View’s Caroline LeTendre over the weekend and cruised to a straight set, 6-1, 6-3 victory.

In the next round, Gemma was knocked off by Moses Brown’s Annie DaSilva 6-2, 6-1.

No other Cranston players qualified for the state tournament in either singles or doubles.

The West team also saw its season come to an end, as it finished up its year with a 6-7 mark in Division II-Suburban A.

The Falcons won three matches in a row toward the end of the season to get back into the playoff mix, but they lost 4-3 to Lincoln last Wednesday and then 5-2 to Narragansett to finish the year.

West was right on the periphery of the six-team playoff field, but missed out on inclusion due to a tiebreaker.

The Cranston East tennis team finished up its season recently, as well, as the ’Bolts were 2-10 as of Monday and were playing at first-place South Kingstown Tuesday to end the season, with results unavailable at press time.

East picked up its second win of the season just last week, as it defeated Exeter-West Greenwich 5-2 last Thursday. The ’Bolts’ other win on the season came by a 4-3 margin against Mt. Hope.

Cross country regular season comes to a close

The East and West boys’ and girls’ cross country teams finished up the regular season last week.

Cranston East’s boys’ team led the way among all four squads, finishing 7-3 in the Suburban Division, which is good for fourth place behind Bishop Hendricken, East Greenwich and Coventry. The ’Bolts also finished second to Barrington in the annual Columbus Day race at Roger Williams Park this week.

In the same division, West finished in ninth place at 2-8.

On the girls’ side, East and West ended the year tied at 4-5, good for fifth place in the Suburban Division.

All four squads will now turn their attention to upcoming class and state meets.
