Ghost Party at Sprague Mansion promises ghoulishly good time

Cranston’s historic Governor Sprague Mansion Museum is getting into the Halloween spirit.

The 12th annual Charlie the Butler Ghost Party will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24 at the museum, located at 1351 Cranston St.

The story of Charlie the Butler goes back to the 1880s. As the tale goes, the butler and father of two daughters was working at the mansion and wanted his eldest child to marry the son of the mansion’s owner at the time. That never came to pass, and it is believed by some that the distraught spirit of the butler roams the mansion.

In addition to the mansion’s haunted history, Friday’s program will feature Rory Raven, a New England mentalist, author and originator of the Providence Ghost Walk who has been a special guest at the Ghost Party in recent years.

It will also feature décor and the “ghoulish pals” of Adam Florio, a tarot card reader.

“It’s a fun event,” said Cranston Historical Society member Gregg Mierka, who serves as resident manager of the Sprague Mansion along with his wife, Mary.

The Mierkas praised the contributions of Florio to the Ghost Party in the last few years, which include frightening figures set up throughout the historic homestead. Some are static, while others are animatronic.

“Every year, I’ve been collecting more specifically for this event,” Florio said, specifically thanking Spirit of Halloween stores for their assistance in building and maintaining his collection.

The Ghost Party serves as a fundraiser for both Sprague Mansion and Joy Homestead, which are overseen by the historical society. The evening also doubles as an opportunity for families and community members to tour the mansion and hear its history from the Mierkas.

The cost of the Ghost Party is $15 per person, and seating is limited. For reservations, contact 944-9226. The program is recommended for children 12 years of age and older.

The mansion has a number of other holiday programs planned in the weeks ahead and can be rented for private functions. For more information visit www.cranston
