The Cranston Child Opportunity Zone, better known as COZ, has a lot to be thankful this year. Housed in the lower level of Gladstone Elementary School, the organization serves families in need in the Cranston area. This Thanksgiving, their holiday food baskets will be getting a boost from the students and families at Gladstone Elementary School who have been sending in non-perishable food items throughout the past few weeks. According to COZ's Grace Swinski, there will be at least 30 baskets assembled in time for Thanksgiving this year, and five schools have collected cans and food for them. The Cranston Rotary and the Women's Guild have also donated baskets of food to the organization. The Gladstone School faculty and staff donated 20 $10 gift cards from staff dress down days.
"The Student Council has been very helpful, counting and carrying the cans down to COZ each morning," said Principal Susan Buonanno. "The school will receive $1.00 per can as a donation to the school, thanks to Alan Shawn Feinstein, who has been very generous."
As the students bring their cans down to COZ, Swinski is available to help out with the counting and sorting, adding a little bit of extra learning into the good deed doing.
"We do some very interesting math in the mornings with the students," Swinski said.
