Glen Hills experiment at first Family Science Night

The students and families at Glen Hills Elementary School had the opportunity last week to participate in the school’s first-ever Family Science Night.

Held Oct. 23, the evening was designed in part to showcase science fair projects and experiments that had been completed together at home, and in part to offer hands-on demonstrations and activities related to the various areas of science. It also allowed students the opportunity to explore scientific topics that especially appealed to them and their individual interests and curiosities.

Students from two of the Cranston Area Career and Technical Center’s programs, Medical Pathways and Pre-Engineering/Robotics, were also on hand to offer hands-on activities to the elementary students and their families. The Medical Pathways students offered the opportunity for younger students to have their vital signs taken using various medical tools and equipment, and the Pre-Engineering/Robotics students demonstrated the use of a robotic arm.

All students were offered the opportunity and encouraged to participate with a project, but it was not mandatory that they do so, and everyone was invited to attend the event whether or not they completed a project to share. Many students at all grade levels participated with projects, some independently, some with family members and some with other student partners.

The project types included collections, models or apparatus, demonstrations, experiments and research projects. The school provided tri-fold boards for anyone who needed one for their display.

An important aspect of the science fair project was that the student understood the Scientific Method and utilized it in their project and display. Each student stated their scientific question, their hypothesis, the materials used, the procedure they followed, the results and followed up with a conclusion summarizing it all.

Throughout the evening, families roamed the cafeteria space viewing the projects, speaking to the students about the process, watching the demonstrations and participating in the hands-on activities. Each student who participated in the Family Science Night with a project received a certificate of participation.
