The third-grade students in Lisa Davis’ and Kate Myette’s classes at Glen Hills Elementary School explored the great outdoors under bright blue skies during an end-of-the-year field trip to the University of Rhode Island’s Botanical Gardens. Vanessa Garcia and Emily Renaud were two of the facilitators at URI, helping to rotate the students through a series of hands-on learning stations, each designed to coincide with many of the science themes the students have learned throughout the year. Each student was able participate in every station as well as in active games during the wait times between stations. The field trip was partially funded through grant opportunities. Above, the students toured one of the on-site greenhouses at URI, learning about many types of plants being grown on the campus. Above left, Ryan Dionizio takes a turn looking through special glasses that showed the students how some insects see the world. Below left, Vanessa Garcia speaks to the students about the importance of worms. Below, Emily Renaud walked the students through each portion of the water cycle, using a small-scale model to represent real life.
