Hawks, Pats, Titans dominate during opening weekend

Bishop Hendricken opened its slate in the newly realigned Division I with two blowout victories against opponents previously from the Eccleston subdivision.

The Hawks crushed Prout, 11-1, at Thayer Arena on Friday despite taking just a three-goal advantage into the third period. Five different Hendricken players scored during the final 15 minutes, including Mike DiMascolo twice to complete his hat trick.

He joined Pat Creamer and Peter Krekorian, both of whom had one goal and three assists, with four points on the night. Sophomore goaltender Patrick Gribbin saved 15 of the 16 shots that came his way.

Hendricken didn’t lose any steam on Saturday against Cumberland. The Hawks made it 20 total goals through two league games after a 9-2 defeat of the Clippers. Creamer posted five points on four goals and an assist, while DiMascolo had four points off a goal and three helpers. Junior goalie John McCarthy stopped 16 shots.

The Hawks take to the road this weekend for contests with the Cranston Co-op (0-1-1) and Burrillville (1-0-0). The tilt with the Falcons begins at 8 p.m. on Friday at the Cranston Ice Rink, and Saturday’s game at the Broncos drops puck at 7:30 p.m. at Levy Rink. Pats overwhelm WW/EWG, Mt. Hope

Pilgrim’s foray into Division III was a strong one, opening the campaign with wins over West Warwick/Exeter-West Greenwich and Mt. Hope.

The Pats pulled away from the Knight Wizards during the second period of Friday’s game. Goals off the sticks of Collin Driscoll and Ron Minear broke the 2-2 tie and gave Pilgrim some insurance heading to the third.

WW/EWG’s Ernesto Watsky cut the deficit to one, but three unanswered goals from Minear, Ty Morgan and Matt Pacheco sealed the win.

Scoring wouldn't be at a premium against Mt. Hope on Saturday, either. The Huskies got as close as 5-4 during the third period, but Minear, Morgan and Driscoll came through in the clutch with three goals in a row.

Morgan and Minear have paced the Pats so far, posting 10 and nine points respectively. Former fourth-string goalie Kyle Dimascio, who has taken the place of juniors-bound M.J. Rocheleau, has made 66 saves so far through two tilts.

Next up for Pilgrim is a Friday meeting with the Narragansett/Chariho Co-op at the Benny Mageira Ice Rink in West Warwick at 9 p.m. Titans drop Chieftains

Warwick Vets transfers Collin Csoszor and D.J. Kowalik welcomed former Division III foe Ponaganset to Division II on Friday night with little hospitality.

Csoszor and Kowalik each scored twice, with Kyle Palumbo adding another, during a 5-1 triumph over the Chieftains. Jake Mitchell, Jack Dean and Camden Palumbo each added assists.

This weekend will be a bit tougher for the Titans, as they play host to Coventry and the Rogers/Middletown/Rocky Hill Co-op at Thayer Arena.

The Oakers, who come to town on Friday at 7:30 p.m., moved down from Division I-Eccleston this offseason. RMR, which reached the D-II semifinals last season, will take to the ice against Toll Gate on Saturday at 7:45 p.m.
