Letterle sparks RIC golfers

Cranston’s Steve Letterle played a major role in helping the Rhode Island College men’s golf team finish as the runner-up in last weekend’s Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships that were played at the Gorham Country Club in Maine.

Letterle, who is in his final season with the Anchormen, carded rounds of 76 and 82 for a 158 total and tied for 10th place in the multi-team championship. RIC came into the event as the defending champ, finishing as runner-up to champion St. Joseph’s College of Maine.

RIC came in at 305, 305 for a total of 610, three strokes less than St. Joseph’s that finished at 301, 306 and 607.

The University of Southern Maine, 610; Worcester State, 622; Johnston & Wales University, 629; UMass Dartmouth, 633; Emmanuel, 643; Suffolk University, 646, and Albertus Magnus College, 706, also competed in the annual GNAC Fall Championships.

RIC was led by Drew Quirk of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, who tied for sixth overall at 151; junior Austin Cilly of Westerly tied for eighth at 152, while senior John Roderick of Hope tied for 10th with Letterle at 153 and Tom Sheran of Marston Mill, Massachusetts, rounded out the Anchormen scoring with a 165.

The Anchormen will now set their sights on this weekend’s New England Intercollegiate Golf Championships that will be played at Captains Country Club in Brewster, Massachusetts, on Sunday and Monday.
