Libraries celebrate lifelong learning across Rhode Island

With October named as Information Literacy Month, the Central Branch of the Cranston Public Library was host to the Oct. 26 “Celebrating Lifelong Learning Across Rhode Island” open house-style event.

With a multitude of tables set up, guests were welcome to circulate around the room, visiting the displays and speaking with the representatives to get a sampling of some of what’s available at the various libraries across the Ocean State.

Tables were set up from public and school libraries, public and private schools, and colleges and universities, and the topics on display outlined resources for teachers, students, senior citizens, future educators, and others.

Display and presentation titles included “The Scholarly Research Process at the Elementary Level” from Carrie Kelly, Gorton Jr. High and URI Libraries; “My Wicked Good Web Tools” from Lisa Sawadzki, Cranston Public Library; “Information Literacy at St. George’s School: Teaching Lifelong Skills in a College Preparatory Environment” from Laura Hooper, St. George’s School; and “Beyond the Classroom: What’s Happening with Teens and Digital Literacy in Public Libraries” from Jenn Cournoyer, Cumberland Public Library and Rebecca Ott, Johnston Public Library.

As guests, including Cranston’s Mayor Allan Fung, visited each table, they could inquire as to what types of offerings were available across the state, and fellow librarians could discuss the possibilities of creating similar offerings at their own libraries. The wealth of knowledge in one space allowed for a sharing of innovative ideas from all over the state, and a time for collaboration between professionals.
