Mayor announces selection of finalists in police chief search

Posted

Dear Citizens of Cranston:

As you may know, we are in the process of selecting a new Chief of Police for the city of Cranston, and I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on where the search stands. First, I would like to thank the men and women of the Cranston Police Department who have served and continue to serve the residents of our city so faithfully.

We are about to embark on a new era of professional service and reform, and the selection of a new chief is critical to those efforts. Throughout this process, I have sought the input of people both inside and outside the city, as well as representatives of the general public, including the president of the local branch of the NAACP. This week marks the beginning of the final selection process. Finalists have been chosen from a pool of six applicants, all from outside the department. Over the coming weeks, I will complete face-to-face interviews with each of the finalists to determine which applicant is best suited to lead our police force into the future. I am very impressed with the credentials of all the finalists, and I am confident we will select a highly qualified professional who will do just that.

I would like to thank the members of the selection committee who have been assisting in the process. The members of the selection committee included the following city officials: Carlos Lopez Estrada, chief of staff; Gerald Cordy, director of administration and acting personnel director; and professional law enforcement officers: Vincent Vespia, chief of the South Kingstown Police Department, and Vincent Carlone, chief of the New Shoreham Police Department, as well as representatives of the general public, including Attorney Christopher Stowe and James Vincent, president of the NAACP – Providence Branch.

Each of the final candidates would make an outstanding police chief for our city, and I am pleased that in the coming weeks we will welcome a new leader to the department who will bring an outsider’s perspective to the job and who will make a commitment to moving us forward to better serve the families and residents of Cranston.

Allan W. Fung

Mayor
