Offering thanks for an outpouring of support

To the citizens of Cranston:

October 12, 2016 was one of the most difficult days of my career and personal life. The Cranston Police Department laid to rest one of the finest K9s that ever served, and I laid to rest my faithful companion and most loyal partner.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you. Thank you to the citizens of Cranston and, many other communities, who reached out to express their sympathies, to my neighbors who lined the street to show their respect, for the countless emails, text messages, phone calls and many different forms of social media posts regarding Bosco. Thank you to those whom I have never had the pleasure of meeting, but took the time to send their heartfelt thoughts. The outpouring show of support is greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten.

I have proudly served the city Of Cranston for over 20 years and I have been humbled by this experience and how many lives were touched by Bosco. When I first got Bosco my goal was to show everyone what he was about. I wanted him to be a positive aspect of the police department and able to reach everyone. I can proudly say Bosco and I achieved far beyond what I thought possible. I enjoyed reflecting on how many people he truly touched, from the very young to the very old. Interestingly enough, everyone said the same thing, “Seeing him made my day,” “He was such a good boy.” I have to disagree with that – he wasn’t good, he was great. He amazed me and everyone around him when they saw him in action as he showcased what he was truly capable of. Bosco never failed me as a partner and often at times made me look good with his capabilities. He made me a better police officer and handler; I will always be grateful.

I want to thank Mayor Fung and his staff; Colonel Winquist, Major Patalano, Major Quirk and the many members of the Cranston Police Department for their support and final call as they honored Bosco. I would also like to thank my fellow K9 Officers Shane O’Donnell and Nathan Bagshaw, who stepped in during this difficult time and organized an honorable tribute to Bosco. It was greatly appreciated. I would like to send my personal gratitude to The Final Gift and Greenwich Valley Vet for the compassion and respect they showed to Bosco throughout this entire process.

Ending Bosco’s suffering, unfortunately, started mine. It was an honor and privilege to serve with him. I will miss him forever. K9 Bosco Badge 462 – may you rest in peace. K9 Officer Gregg M. Bruno
