(Remake of 1982 horror film)

This remake of the popular 1982 horror film that starred JoBeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson sticks close to the original story while bringing it up to 2015.

The simple story has a family of five moving into a new suburban neighborhood that was built over an old cemetery. The ghosts under the house (Why only that house?) are trying to escape, capturing the little girl who will supposedly lead them out.

The modern couple is played by Sam Rockwell and Rosemary DeWitt, who look as frightened and confused as the originals. They call in ghost hunters from the nearby college office of paranormal activity. In turn, these folks call in their expert.

There are the usual doors slamming, loud noises, objects flying through space and apparitions. The big difference is the inclusion of devices not invented back in the ’80s (cell phones, flat screen TVs, and drones) to help the family get their daughter back.

The effects are quite good and the acting is OK. If you like the genre, you may enjoy the update, but except for the modern devices it’s the same old stuff.

Rated PG-13, with some scary moments.
