Park View announces second Wounded Warrior Road Race

Posted

Park View Middle School is a community with a longstanding reputation of giving back – not only to the local neighborhoods, city and state, but to the various causes its members hold dear to their hearts.

Now, for the second year, the school will again be holding a 5K Road Race through Roger Williams Park on Tuesday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day.

The official announcement when out to students at an assembly early in the month of September. Last year, the event was promoted as part of the school’s response to Rachel’s challenge.

“While it is not officially been billed as being part of Rachel’s Challenge yet, we will be speaking to the kids about Rachel’s Challenge and the events which have grown from Rachel’s Challenge,” said John Macera, physical education teacher at Park View and coordinator of the race.

Organizers are keeping in mind that the kids who witnessed Rachel’s Challenge are now at the high school level.

“We have spoken about how we would like to keep the memory of this program alive to our kids. We are going to highlight how Rachel’s Challenge was brought into our district and the impact in had on the middle schools. It is our goal to let the kids witness the power of this program and to continue to build upon the presence of this program as we go forward,” Macera added.

The Wounded Warrior Project sent a DVD to the school to show all the students the benefits that it provides to soldiers. Students are learning about the program during their advisory periods in the morning, and the DVD will be shown over the PVTV station.

Macera said Nov. 11 was chosen because it is Veterans Day, a significant date for the soldiers as well as being a day out of school and work for many, which could help increase participation in the event.

“There is no school that day and we are looking for individuals to help out. There will be a lot of ways to participate, to volunteer, to take part,” Macera said. “Even if you don’t want to run or walk in the race, there are lots of ways for people to help out.”

Macera said he was touched by the number of parents who signed up to help at the school’s open house.

A new element that Macera has added to the day is a one-mile “fun run” for students in grade K-8 starting at 8:30 a.m.

Trying to accommodate all runners, they will also be holding registration on Monday, Nov. 10, in the evening at Park View.

“We had several people from the military run last year. We hope they return and bring more people with them,” Macera said.

At a recent committee meeting, Macera met with over a dozen teachers who are donating their time and energy to help make the race a success.

“I am very proud that Park View students and faculty see the importance of this great event. The fact that we celebrate our veterans on Veterans Day and raise funds for the Wounded Warriors with this event truly shows Park View’s commitment to the community and community events,” said Principal Mike Crudale.
