Park View hosts community energy fair

Posted

With over 150 people in attendance at the recent Community Energy Fair, the cafeteria at Park View Middle School was filled with friends, family and local community members learning about energy, where it comes from, how to use it more efficiently and potential alternative options.

Seventh-grade math teacher Joanne Spaziano has been holding the energy fairs with her NEED (National Energy Education Department) students for several years.

“This is a great event and program. The students get the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and to practice speaking in front of people is a wonderful perk,” she said.

Back for her third straight year, National Grid representative Paula Dunlap had multiple visitors at her station all night as well.

With 21 different stations set up, the guests were easily engaged and left with lots of information.

Among the stations was an energy source exhibit that detailed different sources of renewable energies, such as hydropower, biomass, solar, wind and geothermal.

The Saving Energy Exhibit focused on easier household methods of conserving energy, such as heating, cooling, lighting, water heating, electrical devices and appliances and proper ways to recycle and dispose of trash.

Students also provided information on the amount of energy consumption in the U.S., and discussed why it is important to save energy.

The transportation rules exhibit included examples of fuels such as gasoline and diesel, biodiesel, ethanol, hydrogen, electricity, hybrid electric and propane.
