Percussive Arts Festival at URI on March 9

Posted

If a lively roll of drums or the rhythmic plink of a marimba gets you going, you should pencil in the afternoon of Saturday, March 9, when the University of Rhode Island will host the RI Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society’s 13th annual Percussion Festival in the URI Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, 105 Upper College Road, Kingston.

The festival, which runs from 1-5 p.m., includes percussion ensemble performances open to middle school and high school ensembles from RI, MA, and CT competing before a panel of judges. The day will also feature guest artist Keith Aleo, who will provide an instructional performance/clinic following the presentation of awards at the end of the afternoon. The public is invited to sit in for free.

Aleo is a member of the New Bedford and Indian Hill Symphony Orchestras (Massachusetts) in addition to teaching percussion at URI. His chamber music and solo accomplishments include the Florida Philharmonic, the Miami Chamber Symphony, the New Percussion Quartet, Ensemble 21, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and many solo recitals. He has also recorded several orchestral works on the Harmonia Mundi, Spectrum and Word Records labels. He has given master classes and percussion workshops at numerous universities and at both state and international percussion conventions, including the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) International Convention in Nashville. Formerly a faculty member at the University of Miami and director of percussion studies at Florida International University, he holds a B.M. from the Eastman School of Music and his M.M. from the University of Miami.

The Percussive Arts Society (PAS) is a non-profit service organization. Its purpose is educational, promoting drums and percussion through a network of performers, teachers, students, enthusiasts and sustaining members. PAS accomplishes its goals through publications, a worldwide network of chapters, the PAS website, the Percussive Arts Society International Headquarters/Museum and the annual Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC).

The URI Concert Hall is handicap-accessible, and parking is available in the lot behind the Fine Arts Center, off Bills Road. For more information, please contact the URI Department of Music, 874-2431, or check the website, www.uri.edu/
