Ticket issued after handicap parking incident

A image that was widely shared over social media has led police to issue a parking ticket, and authorities have also asked the public to report suspected handicap parking space violations.

The picture, taken in Garden City Center, showed a disabled operator unable to enter her vehicle, as another vehicle was parked in the loading area adjacent to the handicap parking spot in which she had parked. In a Facebook message, police said the matter was reported to them, and that a follow-up investigation led to the issuing of a parking ticket to the violator.

The Facebook message states that police take such violations “very seriously,” and points to the regular assignment of officers to monitor handicap parking in shopping centers across the community. On Christmas Eve alone, the message indicates, nine violations were issued.

“If someone observes a vehicle parked in a handicap parking space without a handicap placard prominently displayed, they should contact us right away and we will dispatch a car,” the message reads. “They should not approach an occupied vehicle and if they can take a photo of the vehicle in the spot and send to us via Facebook, we will follow up.”
