5 teens hurt in weekend crash

A Johnston 18-year-old is facing charges in connection with a Sunday morning rollover crash on Plainfield Pike that sent he and four teenage passengers to the hospital.

Blake Carpenter is charged with four counts of driving to endanger and one count of reckless driving

A 17-year-old girl from Cranston who was ejected from the vehicle was the most seriously hurt in the crash, with her injuries reportedly including a fractured vertebrae, other broken bones, road rash on her body, and blood between her skull and brain. She was reportedly in stable condition at Hasbro Children’s Hospital on Monday.

The other passengers were three Johnston girls – 18-year-old Danielle Fortin, 18-year-old Hannah Pine, and a 16-year-old.

The crash occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 31. According to police, the vehicle – a Mazda sedan – skidded and crashed into a utility pole, snapping it in half and sending wires into the roadway. The vehicle then flipped over. Fortin and the 17-year-old were not wearing seatbelts and were both thrown from the vehicle, police said.

There were no signs any of the vehicle’s occupants had been drinking, police said. Speed appeared to be the main factor in the crash.

Man pleads guilty to bank heist

A Warren man has pleaded guilty to a three-year-old bank robbery in Cranston.

Trevor Krous Gaskell, 35, entered the plea to two counts of bank robbery in U.S. District Court on Jan. 28, according to the office of U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha.

He remains in federal custody, with his sentencing scheduled for May 3.

The charges stem from two robberies – a Jan. 17, 2013 heist at the Washington Trust branch on Plainfield Pike, and an April 29, 2013 heist at a Bank Newport branch in Warren.

Neronha’s office said Gaskell admitted to both robberies. In each case, he handed a note to tellers demanding cash and warning against the use of dye packs or GPS trackers. No weapons were shown in either incident. Nearly $5,000 was taken in the Cranston robbery, while between $2,000 and $3,000 was taken in the Warren heist.

According to prosecutors, Gaskell was previously convicted of robbing a bank in Swansea, Mass.

The FBI assisted Cranston Warren police with the investigation.
