BIKE STRIKES OFFICER

At approximately 8:45 p.m. on April 27, Officer Matthew Davis reported being on a private detail at 39 West Restaurant and standing in the parking lot while three school buses unloaded students. As that was happening, the officer states, a male party was operating a red dirt bike up and down Green Avenue at high rates of speed.

The dirt bike operator pulled into the 39 West parking lot and turned “and was coming towards my direction,” Davis reports. Because the bike was turning, its velocity had decreased, according to the officer.

Davis reports he put both his hands straight out in front of him in an attempt to stop the operator. At that point, Davis reports the operator saw he was a police officer and accelerated while continuing in the same direction.

“The operator then drove through my left arm and shoulder, causing me to spin,” Davis writes in his narrative. He then reported the incident to dispatch, describing the operator as a white male wearing a black sweatshirt and jeans and traveling north on Green Avenue toward Randall Street.

Officer Luis Melendez reported hearing Davis’ radio transmission and responding to the area. At that point, he located a subject matching the description in the driveway of a Randall Street residence. The subject reportedly told Melendez he had been making a turn in the parking lot when a man approached him, causing him to become nervous, accelerate and strike the man with the dirt bike.

Davis then arrived at the scene and identified the subject as the operator who had struck him.

Brodrick L. Bedard, 18, of 588 Lewis Farm Road, Coventry, was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and operating with a suspended license. He was later arraigned and held on held on $5,000 bail with surety.

EMBEZZLEMENT CHARGE

Officer Brandon J. Barth reports responding to the Shell gas station at 1036 Reservoir Ave. at approximately 9:37 a.m. on April 29 for a report of embezzlement. Dispatch had advised a district manager was seeking to press charges against a female employee who was at the scene.

Upon arriving, Barth reports speaking with the district manager, who said he was investigating a cash shortage that occurred on April 27. Through that investigation, the district manager told police, video surveillance showed the employee in question taking and playing several lottery scratch tickets that belonged to the store and were not paid for, and also removing a pack of Parliament cigarettes from a carton without paying. The value of the tickets and cigarettes was $437.36, the district manager reportedly told police, and the company wished to press charges. Barth reports the district manager provided a USB device containing the surveillance video.

Barth reports police then attempted to arrest the employee, who is said to have tried to throw a tote bag containing paperwork so she would not be seen with it. Barth reports showing the paperwork to the district manager, who said it was from April 27 and referenced lottery sales.

Lori A. Gorman, 50, of 921 York Ave., Pawtucket, was arrested and charged with embezzlement over $100. She was later released with a summons pending her arraignment at Kent County District Court.

BONES FOUND

Officer Randall Babcock reports being dispatched to Wellington Ave. at approximately 1:19 p.m. on April 29 after a Cranston highway employee reported finding skeletal remains in the woods.

Upon arrival, Babcock met with the employee and observed the remains in the wooded area behind the bus turn-around at the end of Wellington Avenue. Babcock then contacted the Medical Examiner’s Office and sent pictures of the remains to the MD on duty. After an examination of the pictures, it was determined that the remains were not human.

STOLEN BATTERIES

Officer Dennis Trinh reports being dispatched to 109B Fletcher Ave. at approximately 3:35 a.m. on April 30 after a witness reported observing suspicious activity by a male suspect in a tow truck parking lot.

Upon arrival, Trinh spoke with the witness and was directed to the area of the suspect. He then observed a gray Jeep parked in the driveway of the tow truck business with a male seated inside. Trinh approached the vehicle and questioned the suspect, who claimed that he had pulled into the driveway because he needed to urinate. Officer Louis Pezzullo, who had arrived on scene to support Trinh, then checked the area where the suspect claimed to have had urinated and found no evidence of wet spots.

Trinh then observed a large battery in the back of the Jeep and questioned the suspect, who claimed that he had purchased the battery three weeks ago. When asked to describe the battery, the suspect was unable to provide any identifying details. The witness who had originally reported the suspicious activity then informed Trinh that one of the batteries from a tow truck was missing. The owner of the tow truck was then contacted and after arriving on scene identified the battery in the back of the suspect’s Jeep as his.

James Perfetto, 49, of 2073 Plainfield Pike, Johnston, was taken into custody and charged with larceny under $1,500.
