BREAK-IN

Officer Dennis Trinh was one of a number of Cranston officers who responded to a broken glass alarm at the Moon Market at 1478 Park Ave. around 1:25 a.m. on July 1. He said one of the officers found a bike and a cut screen at the back of the building and the owner showed up shortly after that with the keys to the store. He said they systematically went through the store looking for a suspect. He said they didn’t find a suspect but they did find some ceiling panels out of place and noticed dust on the floor indicating there had been recent movement of the tiles. He said the space above the tiles continued into the next room was visible. He said he took a look inside the space and saw blue latex-clad fingers hanging over a ceiling tile, which then pulled back when an officer yelled, “Show me your hands and come out!” Trinh said officers finally got the suspect down from the ceiling, but he refused to offer his hands and, after a brief struggle, was put in handcuffs. Trinh said they found 19 packs of Newport cigarettes in the suspect’s backpack. A broken cash register was found near the back window, along with some burglary tools. He said officers viewed the surveillance that showed the suspect entering the rear of the store and making his way to the front with a backpack exactly like the one they found. He said the video then went blank because the suspect attempted to destroy the video. He said the owner of the store saw the suspect in the back of the police car and identified him as a frequent customer in the store. Danny Nieves, 21, of 18 America St. in Cranston, was charged with breaking and entering, resisting arrest and possession of burglary tools. He was held on $10,000 surety bail.

WARRANTS

A Providence man who was visiting his son in the ACI on June 30 was arrested on an outstanding warrant for felony larceny over $1,500. Officer Kim Carroll said she went to the ACI and brought Eleutherio Rosario, 55, of 124 Mawney St. in Providence, back to headquarters for booking and then held for arraignment.

Officer Anthony Sassone McHugh reports meeting a man in the lobby who wanted to update his registered sex offender status on June 30, but when a check was run on his name, it came back with a warrant for non-support out of Family Court. Ralph Merolla, 47, of 121 Central St. in Warwick, was later transported to the ACI.

Officer Brenton Medeiros reports going to 1581 Elmwood Ave. to investigate an assault complaint around 8 a.m. on June 28. He said he didn’t find any evidence of an assault, but he did find out that Johnston police wanted the man who was named in the complaint. Richard Paul Magnone Jr., 40, of 1581 Elmwood Ave., was held while Johnston found someone to come and get him.

Officer Luis Collado reports he went to 127 Pleasant St. for a disturbance and found no disturbance, but a man and woman admitted they had been yelling earlier because she was “mad at everyone” and said they would be quiet for the rest of the night. She also mentioned that she had an outstanding warrant from Family Court for failure to pay child support. Collado said that turned out to be true and Annie Russell, 35, of the same address, was arrested and later taken to the ACI.

TAZED

Officer Robert Tortorella reports stopping a car for passing through an intersection at Cranston Street and Sherman Avenue without stopping. He said the driver was unusually reluctant to admit that his license was actually suspended and continued to look through the glove compartment to convince Tortorella that there was no license in the glove compartment, that the computer was right and the driver’s license was suspended. He said the man continued to stall and protest that the computer was wrong and refused to get out of the car. He said he called backup and they attempted to get the man out with no success, until Tortorella warned him if he didn’t submit to being arrested, he would be tazed. The man didn’t submit and was tazed, and then was transported to Kent Hospital to have the barbs removed. Brent Joseph Barrett, 45, of 111 Scituate Ave. in Johnston, was later released with a summons.

HOME DEFENSE

Officer Christine Bolduc reports she was dispatched to Gentian Road around 9:35 p.m. on July 4 for a report of a man beating on the caller’s car in the driveway, followed by a second call from a woman who said the man was banging on her door begging for water and wanting to come in. She said she and other officers were on their way when a third call informed them that the man had entered a home on Nelson Road and was being held at gun point by the owner. He said she arrived to find a man standing in the doorway with a gun pointing inside the house, yelling “Don’t move!” to someone inside. Bolduc said she drew her weapon and asked the man to put his down, but the man kept pointing and said, “He is in the kitchen and my wife is in there!” Bolduc said she asked a second time to put the rifle down and this time the man complied. She said she entered the house and saw a man standing at the kitchen sink with his back to her. She said he put his hands up above his head and on the cabinets without being told. She said she ordered him to put his hands behind his back and he did so, saying, “Whatever you say, officer.” She said she read him his rights and he began to insist he wanted to call his parents and he didn’t know what he was doing. She said he smelled strongly of alcohol but Bolduc said his behavior was beyond what you would expect from alcohol. She said the owners of the house told her that they never loaded the .22-caliber rifle that they pointed at the man and that he really wasn’t being aggressive after he walked in the back door. They also said that he wasn’t that concerned about having a gun pointed at him. She said the young man’s parents showed up while they were on the scene and explained that they had been looking for the 18-year-old after he left a party on Horizon Drive. Bolduc said they were shocked to hear what happened and described the son as a good boy and a great student at who was ready to start at a prestigious college in the fall. They said they never knew him to drink or do drugs before or get into trouble. Nevertheless, he was charged with felony breaking and entering and disorderly conduct and held for arraignment.

FAST AND LOOSE

Officer Russell Henry reports investigating an accident at Park and Warwick avenues on July 2. He said the driver of a Jeep said to be responsible for the accident claimed his keys fell out of the ignition and caused him to lose control of his vehicle. Henry said he suspected the man was under the influence. He said he admitted taking a painkiller earlier and police found an empty and a full beer can and an open bottle of peppermint liquor in the Jeep. He said the vehicle smelled of alcohol and they found an empty prescription bottles that had contained oxycodone. Henry said the man failed a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters where he registered a 0.00 blood alcohol content on the breath test. Thomas R. Carlo, 55, of 139 Aborn Ave. in Warwick, was still charged with laned roadway violations, obedience to stop signs and presence of alcohol while driving.

Officer Wayne Decosta reports a hit and run call around 5:55 p.m. on July 1. He said several people told him the car responsible was heading south on Budlong. He said he spotted the car near Dean Parkway and clocked it at 49 miles per hour on his radar. He pulled the car over and noticed new damage to the hood and bumper. He said he pulled the car over and, as he approached the car, the driver said, “He hit me!” Decosta said several other cars pulled over and the drivers were all yelling at him and telling Decosta he almost caused several head-on collisions. Based on what they said, he arrested the driver for the hit-and-run and took him to headquarters. David R. Silva, 25, of 33 Winter Ave. in Warwick, was charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident. He was later released on $1,000 personal recognizance.
