A FATHER’S GIFT

Officer Daniel Cragin reports he was on a DUI patrol around 11 p.m. on Route 10 when he stopped a car for speeding and tailgating after it almost hit another car, which it then tailgated at 65 mph. He also noticed it had a defective taillight. Cragin said the driver was “extremely agitated” about being stopped, and learned that the man had no proof of insurance and the plates on the car belonged on another vehicle. The officer said the driver explained that he just bought the car but then showed him a bill of sale with no date on it. There were no records found for the car the man was driving and he had no inspection sticker. Cragin said he called for a tow and the driver became more upset and reportedly said, “Can you give me my [expletive] back so I can get the [expletive] out of here,” and, “You [expletive] Cranston cops have nothing better to do; why don’t you go solve a crime, I didn’t do anything wrong! This is why my son is going to grow up and hate the police.”

Angel J. Olivencia, 31, of 25 Tobey St. in Providence, was given tickets for speeding, operating an unregistered car, misuse of plates, no sticker and a broken taillight.

SHOPLIFTING

Officer Dyanna Detroia reports arresting a Warwick woman at the Kmart store on Garfield Avenue on July 12. Loss prevention told her they saw the woman select a handbag, remove the paper stuffing and then proceed through they store concealing other objects in a shopping bag before attempting to leave without paying for the goods. Kathleen Margerison, 44, of 699 Church Ave. in Warwick, was held for arraignment at the ACI when police learned she had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear.

Officer Anthony Sassone McHugh reports stopping a Buick Verano with an expired inspection sticker on Reservoir Avenue around 10 p.m. on July 10. He said the driver provided him with license and registration but no proof of insurance, and he learned the registration expired in January. He also learned the driver had two active arrest warrants from Cranston and Woonsocket for shoplifting. Angela M. Cabral, 38, of 43 Ronian St. in Woonsocket, was processed for the Cranston warrant and then released to Woonsocket police, with several tickets for motor vehicle violations.

Officer Anthony Laquale was dispatched to the CVS sore at 681 Reservoir Ave. around 1:50 p.m. on July 7. A loss prevention agent introduced him to a suspect accused of taking two Hallmark gift bags and six other Hallmark products and then proceeding to another part of the store where he allegedly pulled out a CVS shopping bag and concealed the $46.45 worth of goods before walking out without paying for them. The suspect reportedly also admitted he stole toothpaste and sun screen earlier that day, worth another $35.27. Matthew Gutter, 29, of 908 County St. in New Bedford, was charged with shoplifting and later released on $1,000 surety bail.

Megan Boucher, 28, of 358 Pine Orchard Road in Chepachet, was charged with felony shoplifting (as a habitual offender), conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretenses on July 7 after she and a Cranston man reportedly attempted to return items that they had just stolen from the Walmart store on Plainfield Pike. Loss prevention said they watched her and Brandon Matthew Varone, 31, of 28 Lawrence St. in Cranston, select $68.88 worth of merchandise and present it at the return counter as purchases made earlier. Varone was charged with conspiracy and misdemeanor shoplifting.

‘NO PRINTS’

Officer Wayne Russell reports arresting a man at Bob’s Store on Oaklawn Avenue on July 7 who refused to let police take his fingerprints. The officer initially got a call about a shoplifting in progress, but when he got there, he was told the man had left and was being followed by a loss prevention officer that he was threatening to stab. Russell said he found the man, ordered him to stop and then grabbed his wrist when it looked like he was going to run.

Russell said he later saw video surveillance of the suspect coming into the store in his stocking feet, going to the shoe department, putting on the sneakers and putting the empty box back on the shelf before he walked out of the store. He said the suspect attempted to break away and refused to give Russell his wrist and pulled them tight to his body. Russell said the suspect tried to head butt him before the suspect was taken to the ground and cuffed. He said he was taking the suspect to headquarters when the suspect declared he would not be fingerprinted and, true to his word, he refused to cooperate at headquarters. He told police he had been fingerprinted over a 100 times and would not be printed again.

Russell said they made numerous attempts to fingerprint the man identified as Paul Joseph Lewis, 56, with an address given as simply Unit 46 in Providence. Russell said they left him in the cell. He said Lewis told them, “You will have to shoot me in the head to get my fingerprints.”

Lewis was charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest.
