Cranston man killed

in Mass. crash

Massachusetts State Police say a Rhode Island man has died after his car went out of control on northbound Interstate 495 west of Boston and was hit by a truck.

Police have not said that the 1:40 p.m. Saturday accident was weather-related, but about 5 inches of snow had fallen in the area.

Police said 24-year-old Makthra Men of Cranston was driving a 2008 Hyundai sedan in the middle lane when it went out of control and struck the left and right guardrails just north of exit 21 in Hopkinton. He was transported to UMass Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the driver of a tractor-trailer behind the man tried slow down but struck his car. The truck driver, a 33-year-old Northborough man, wasn’t injured.

The left two lanes of the highway were closed for several hours.

Missing dog sought

A family is seeking the return of their White Maltese dog after it was either taken or escaped following a break-in at a home on Sinclair Avenue on Jan. 23.

The dog, named Nino, is 3-years old and is microchipped, according to information posted on the “RI Lost Pets” Facebook page. A reward is reportedly being offered for the dog’s return, with no questions asked.

Anyone with information regarding Nino is asked to call 401-241-4218 or the Cranston Animal Shelter at 401-464-8700

“Coffee with the

Chief” postponed

The Cranston Police Department has postponed the “Coffee with the Chief” event that had been scheduled for Jan. 22 at Brewed Awakenings.

According to the department, Col. Michal Winquist was unable to attend the event after the influenza virus that had prevented him from attending the initially scheduled gathering the week before devolved into pneumonia.

“The Colonel looks forward to rescheduling this event as soon as possible and continuing the Department’s mission of direct contact with the public to solve those problems that affect our community,” the department said in a statement.

“Coffee with the Chief” is designed an opportunity for community members to meet the new chief and talk about his mission and vision for policing in the city.

For more information, please contact the Cranston Police Office of Community Outreach c/o Capt. Vincent McAteer at 401-942-2211.
