Police officer charged in stand-off

A Hopkinton police sergeant was charged with carrying a weapon while intoxicated, a felony, and two misdemeanors following a two-hour stand-off at a relative's home in the Garden City area of Cranston last week.

John Patton was arraigned in District Court on July 10 on the charges stemming from an incident on July 5 at 149 Plantation Drive.

Cranston Police Maj. Robert Ryan confirmed the arrest and charges Thursday morning but declined to release Patton's arrest report and that could constitute an unwarranted invasion of Patton's privacy Ryan said, citing federal law about medical records. Patton was treated at Rhode Island Hospital for unspecified reasons.

Ryan said the stand-off ended with Patton's peaceful surrender. Ryan would not answer further questions about the charges or confirm whether the gun belonged to Patton.
